iPad mail can't compose email or reply to email

I'm having some trouble with my iPad - all of a sudden I'm unable to compose mail or reply to an email. When I press the compose icon, it highlights when I press it but then nothing happens.

The same thing happens when I try to reply to an email.

It was working fine yesterday but all of a sudden "nothing" happens when I press these icons.

Any advice on a fix or what's going on?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
