HDMI cable being recognized as DVI

I just picked up a 2nd Gen Apple TV and hooked it to my BenQ SD3742 TV using an HDMI connection. Whenever I switch to the HDMI1 input on the TV, the onscreen status changes to DVI1. As a result I get no sound. Since my TV doesn't have optical inputs, I'd rather just get the sound to come in through the HDMI cable. I assume this is a problem with the TV, where I have to somehow force it to recognize the input as HDMI and not DVI. I've gone through all the setting options on both the TV and Apple TV with no success.

Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

Thanks for the reply. I also have a cable box that uses HDMI. It works fine with both audio and video on the HDMI2 port. I've tried switching ports and switching cables. Each time the cable box is recognized as HDMI while the Apple TV input status switches from HDMI to DVI.

So when you try apple tv it says DVI when on HDMI 1 port and HDMI 2 port? I have an HDMI/DVI port on my TV and it has no problems recognizing HDMI as I have it plugged in with with HDMI cable, not DVI.

Yup, I've tried 2 different HDMI cables on both ports. Both times it switches to DVI. The picture quality if perfect but there is no sound. When I use the same cable on the cable box (in both ports), it shows up as HDMI with sound, as it should. Not sure if this is a TV problem or Apple TV problem.

My receiver doesn't have an optical input, so I would need to get some type of adapter box that converts the optical signal to the analog RCA that my receiver uses. Shame that I have to do that instead of going straight through HDMI, but I may not have any other choice.

My receiver is also analogue, but I am routing audio through the TV. However, since your HDMI is not transfering audio you would have to go direct via converter. Try checking your TV settings etc first.

The TV has a setting to switch between Video / PC for the HDMI / DVI setting. But even when I switch to Video, the input still shows DVI with no sound. Since the TV works fine with the cable box HDMI on the same port and cable, and since I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, I assume it's a conflict just between these two devices (each company will probably blame the other).

I suppose I have no choice but to invest in an optical to RCA audio adapter for another $50 (half the price of the Apple TV!).

Do you have another input on the TV? Maybe it's a problem with the cable.

It's likely a TV problem. Check your settings and refer back to the manual. Also, do you have a receiver with optical input, because that would be another option.
