Can't print - "Error during printing"

All test pages are printed OK, but I can't print from any app all of a sudden. Re-installing the driver didn't help.

Canon IP4300

Thank you for some advice!

Mac OS X (10.6.5), "Please don't tell me to re-install the whole OS or to buy a new Mac!"

What happens when you can't print? Are there errors, anything in Console or in the /var/log/cups/error_log file?
Have you tried deleting and re-adding the printer? Resetting the print system or fixing permissions? Any other troubleshooting steps besides reinstalling the driver?

If none of the troubleshooting steps help, you can send me and ASP: my address is jblancha@mac.com. Use Utilities/System Profiler and do Save. Hopefully the install logs will indicate what has happened.

I have the same error while trying to print to Epson T40W, the thing is it was working fine until a couple of days ago..
On the the console I found this:

Any advice?

Thank you

Dlopardo,

Could you send me an ASP please? My address is jblancha@mac.com. Use Utilities/System Profiler and do Save. Hopefully the install logs will indicate what has happened. The other logs will indicate what happened during the printing process. If you'd like to provide a detailed CUPS log, please enter "cupsctl --debug-logging" in Terminal, do a print job, then create the ASP. Thanks very much.

Thank you for your reply!

There is no error message except the one mentioned above.
What did you mean by "resetting the print system"?
Permissions repair does not change anything – as always.

I found one suspicious log entry:

Is that of any use?

Open Print & Fax Prefs and control-click in the list of printers. That will bring up the contextual menu to reset the printing system.

Thank you for including this. What type of document were you printing?

Same here. I've tried resetting the printing system, repair permissions, installing the latest printer driver update. So far, all I get while trying to print is "Error while printing" and the following messages in the console log. I also enabled debug logging with cupsctl and

from console:
12/4/10 3:23:23 PM TextEdit[1968] Printing failed because PMSessionEndDocumentNoDialog() returned -30870.

from cups error_log:
D [04/Dec/2010:15:37:08 -0800] Send-Document ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON
D [04/Dec/2010:15:37:08 -0800] cupsdIsAuthorized: requesting-user-name="bryanparke"
D [04/Dec/2010:15:37:08 -0800] Send-Document client-error-document-format-not-supported: Unsupported format 'application/pdf'!
E [04/Dec/2010:15:37:08 -0800] Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON) from localhost

Just so everyone is aware I tried everything you could possibly do to fix this...

I reinstalled CUPS 1.4.4 which allegedly would fix the problem - that was a no-go.

I reverted to CUPS 1.4.5 still did nothing. Reverted to apple's CUPS 1.4.5 which did nothing. Repaired permissions, reset printing system, reset PRAM, etc.

I investigated what that error code meant, no documentation on the internet. Tele support had no good answer either.

For some reason this was only an issue on 1 of 3 of my computers running 10.6.5.

After doing a backup and reformatting my hard drive, reinstalling 10.6.5 fresh, no more problem.

I'm not sure that Apple will be able to offer you any other advice, but I'd be hopeful to see if 10.6.6 which appears to be in developers hands now offers a fix. It may not, as this is appears to be an isolated problem to only a few of us.

Mine is an Epson Workforce 615 (610 series is the driver it uses) connected via wifi, selected and configured via bonjour. This exact process was used on the other two macs both running 10.6.5. The difference for me was that I was on the beta 10.6.5 before the final release came out. Ever since the final release came out I am no longer able to print to that printer - even though the other two macs can. I should mention that I have not installed any epson software on the computers but am using the drivers/software that comes with snow leopard, including the latest software updates.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with an Epson driver moving to Snow Leopard. I had to uninstall all my printers, and start reinstall all over again. I have no idea if this will help your problem, but if you simply tried to reinstall without uninstalling, then you might be running into the same problem. Also, I think Epson has some printer driver upgrades that are being pushed by the Apple Update. Check your software update program if you don't have it automatically updating for you (which I don't recommend).
