mono or stereo symbol - dumb question - but...

Hello:

I'm puzzled by the toggle switch in the audio section of clip settings (for when capturing video content). I'm using FCP 7.03

Which is the setting for mono and which is for stereo. I want to capture two discreet channels separately (recorded from two different mics - so I want two separate mono clips that I can then adjust as needed).

Is stereo when the symbol shows two circles side by side?
Is mono when the circles overlap and a fork appears (one prong pointing to channel one and the other prong pointing to channel two)?

Or is it vice versa?

Would it not have been simpler if they could have used the words "stereo" and "mono" in place of a symbol?

Oh well.

Thanks.

This is called "the cassette" which changes (with a point and click toggle) the audio channel capture setting for the audio channels.

When the cassette is toggled and the forks appears pointing to the top and bottom the channels are captured as stereo. When the cassette toggled and the forks disappear it is now captured as dual channel mono.

Hope this helps
