Iphone 4 battery.... 300 hours stand by????

Hi everyone,

Just got the Iphone 4 and the specs say 300 hours stand by time. What is that supposed to mean??? My battery is dead in about 24 hours. That is with light use, a few calls, check my mail a couple of times....

Please advise, could I be running a program (ap) that is draining my battery?

The standby estimate is going to be based on the phone being on, but screen blank and locked, and nothing but the voice radio active. So no push mail or fetch, no bluetooth, no GPS apps, no data at all - just sitting, screen blank, doing nothing but listening for incoming voice call signals.

Anything and everything you do interactively from the phone screen, or schedule to be done in the background (like push mail or other notifications) is not standby time.

I think the 300 hours standby can only be achieved if you just have the phone sitting there and don't touch it at all. On lazy days when at home I've gone through a whole day not touching the phone and it barely goes down a few %. Once you start doing anything on the phone of course the standby time will lower.

I would be more concerned about usage time. It seems on average people can get about 5-7 hours of usage before the phone needs to be charged.

iPhone 4 offers *_up to_* 7 hours of talk time on 3G, 14 hours of talk time on 2G, 6 hours of Internet use on 3G, 10 hours of Internet use on Wi-Fi, 10 hours of video playback, or 40 hours of audio playback on a full charge at original capacity. In addition, iPhone 4 features *_up to_* 300 hours of standby time.

The specs include "up to".

Standby Time
Testing conducted by Apple in May 2010 using preproduction iPhone 4 units and software. All settings were default except: Call Forwarding was turned on; Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks was turned off. *Battery life depends on the cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPhone units; _actual results may vary_*.

Your welcome. I find my 3Gs (which is about 15 months old now) will comfortably get me through the day, but I charge it overnight every night. I had to do the same with other smart phones (my HTC Tilt was no better on battery life, although you could get a honking big extended battery for it, if you didn't mind the huge bulk of it).

The other thing to remember is that the Li battery in your phone is fine with partial discharge/charge cycles, so don't hesitiate to plug it in when convenient to do so, to top it off. I have a charger at work, one in the car, I sometimes carry an extender battery case in my napsack when out - I just plug it in whenever it's easiest to do so.

There are few apps that can run in background. Obviously, push mail or frequent fetch mail, will draw down the battery. But most apps, if they are open on the screen are not going to be able to do anything. GPS use is also a big battery drain, and 3G data will use more power than wifi. I find bluetooth on, but not connected or idle in standby is not a huge drain at all, but in use, it will make an impact on battery life.
