Macbook randomly shuts down.

Hi everyone,
my macbook has recently started shutting down randomly. It never used to do this. One minute im on it and then the next minute it goes completely blank and turns off. When it turns of a tick noise is heard. It never used to do this and its really anoying me. After it turns off, I cant turn it back on normally, i have to unplug the charge, take out the battery, put it back in, put the charger back in, turn it on. The only thing i can think of is that its doing this because it might be getting too hot, but then it would have done this before right? It gets warm but not THAT hot, so can someone help me?
thanks

Mac OS X (10.5.8), 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor. 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Hello Alex and Leo,

I seen both of your posts and wanted to recommmend a couple of troubleshooting steps that the applecare techs may have you do, like resetting the "System Managment Controller" (SMC) and verifying/repairing your disk permissions and hard disk through the disk utility.I posted a link at the end of this reply that might help the problems your having with your systems. Before trying these steps you need to verify if your able to remove the batteries from your macbooks or not because the steps are different for laptops in which the battery can be removed and cannot be removed.

Please let me know if this does help or not, if it doesn't i will be happy to post the other link for the next step if needed.

Hey Alex

No problem just trying to help and no thats not a stupid question, i understnad where your coming from completely. Resetting your SMC can actually enhance the performance of your system, it does not wipe the hard drive in any way at all, it simply resets the low level functions and is a basic step for resolving unexpected shutdowns.

Ok guys, I have just reset my smc, so we will see how things go. I turned off the macbook, took out the charger, took out the battery, held the power button for 5 seconds, then put the battery back in and the charger back in, then turned on the macbook. Those are the correct steps right?

Anyway we will see how things go and if it turns off again ill let you know, and thanks for your help so far guys.
