iPhone 2g: Which iOS?

I have an iPhone 2g with 2.2.1. Should I upgrade to 3.1.3 or a lower version of 3? I'm concerned because this original iPhone isn't exactly a speed daemon. Are there significant interface lags?

While I am toying with the very real possibility of upgrading to an iPhone4 in January, I find this phone is nearly perfect for how I use a mobile device. I'm not a heavy data user so the higher data speeds would be mostly wasted on me although mms would be nice. If it weren't for the lack of compatible apps, I'd probably be just fine with 2.2.1.

MacBook 2,1, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

I'd say 3.1.3

It runs okay and is required for a good number of apps for some reason. I had 3.1.2 installed on my original iPhone and most apps wouldn't install because it required 3.1.3

If you want some real fun go back to iPhone OS 1.x...

If you want to upgrade.... Jump to 3.0 and then to 3.1.3

It's safer.

I have it on 3.1.3 and it works normally but of course i have to release memory a lot because i use push notifications and other stuff that runs in background.

Why is it safer to go 3.0 then 3.1.3?

What is the most convenient way to release memory and how often do you usually do it? I used to have to perform a hard reboot of my old Blackberry Curve almost daily.

As far as I know, there is no legit option for upgrading to anything but the latest available software.

We had an original iphone with 3.1.3 and had no issues.

I've read some people issues after upgrading from 2.2.1 to 3.1.3 and the thing is that as 3.0 is a mayor upgrade is better to do it in steps 🙂.

It's like is you have Panther (in those days) and jump with the Upgrade DVD to 10.4.11. It can be done but i prefer to do it in order. It takes much more time but i believe it's safer.

I use an app that's called MemTool but there are a lot of utillities that can make this trick on the AppStore.

I release memory each time i have been used the iPod, Safari or Mail.

Those are the 3 apps that can stay in the background.

If the devices is restored and then set up as a new device, there should be no issues jumping right up to 3.1.3.

There shouldn't be any issues just updating the device but in a larger jump I'd say just restore the iPhone and start from scratch, I've always found that works best anyways rather than upgrading.
