Archive install snow leopard - options

Hey all

I've had a few issues with my MBP and it's got to the stage where it will no longer boot past the blue screen. So I have tried pretty much everything but nothing is helping

I decided to boot from the original installation disks and I used disk utility to check the drive and repair permissions. It said that the disk was fine and the permissions were fixed. Restarted and no luck, still stuck

So as a last resort I went to archive and install. But the option is no longer there. I did some reading and it sounds like Apple has decided to remove the option and make it a default.

So my question is, if I choose to install osx from the originals disks will it wipe all my old info, pics, iTunes, movies etc or will it retain that information on the drive and just install a new version of snow leopard?

Obviously I don't want to lose data! Yes I do have a back up but it's a few weeks old and there's recent stuff i really need to keep.

Cheers for any help!

MBP 2.16 GHz IC Duo, 2 GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.5)
