Streaming from iPad to ATV2 and Air Play?

Recently got Apple tv-2, set up appears ok for streaming from laptop (MacBokkPro 13", OSX 6.xx)
1/ Can I stream videos & specifically (rented or bought) films from iTunes, which I have downloaded to my iPad, (sometimes like to watch, when on-the-go) without syncing (transferring) those to my laptop ?.
2/ in other words is DIRECT streaming from iPad to ATV-2 possible NOW or do we have to wait for ioS-4.2 to ve released for iPad ?
3/ if one streams from laptop (MBk) to ATV-2 , how to activate Air Play ?

Hi think you'll have to wait for the 4.2 update to stream direct from ipad as for your laptop have you updated your itunes to 10.1 which has airplay ?

The AppleTV and iPad must be running iOS 4.2 in order for this functionality to work... IOS 4.2 is due by the end of this month...

How do you be sure the ATV is running the 4.2? It's a couple years old but think they do the updates on occasion. My iPad is new so assume it is the 4.2. Will it just come up on my iPad when I view a video if my ATV is on?

First you must have the black apple TV. Then go to settings -> general -> update software. If you are up to date, it will tell you so. If not, it will prompt you to update the software...
