lots of duplicate file (clip) names HVX200

Feature doc shot on Panasonic HVX200. Footage imported (FCP 7) through log and transfer, keeping original file names so as to maintain reference to originals. The editor is in mid-stride, and I have just discovered that there are lots of duplicate file names. Out of a total of about 4,000 clips, there are over 300 with the same names. They are always in different reels (rolls), but this is just insane. Sometimes they are only a roll apart. ex, roll 152 and 153 booth have a 00052Y. First of all, I can't believe the camera created that many duplicates. But more importantly, what are the implications from here. Will FCP continue to differentiate as long as the rolls are different? Has anyone else run into such a ridiculous problem with this camera or another?

The issue will arise if you have to RECONNECT for any reason. Yes, I have had this, 20 clips out of about 2000...there was a lot of manual reconnecting.

You can change the names all you want. FCP knows the connection. There is a 32-character unique identifying code buried in the metadata that FCP uses to keep track when you change the name. I always change the name now.

When I was setting the project up I was getting conflicting information about changing clip names, and opted not to. In any case, moving forward now, it seems that as long as "Matched Name and Reel Only" is checked in the reconnect dialogue box, it will not reconnect to the wrong file (from a different reel). Is this the case in your experience? Or should I go through and try to rename the 300+ files (and clips) on both the edit and assistant suite?
