How do I get my Synth Hardware to play through my Mac Soundsystem?

I want to use my drum machines and hardware synths through my Mac just like all the plug-in/Virtual Synths... But I don't know how to accomplish this...

I have your standard 1/4" output plugs on my Synth Gear (Hardware) and want to get it to play through core audio like my Virtual Synths do. Also, I'd like to control and record them through my DAW.

What is the best way to accomplish this "feat"?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

you have to trigger your external synths with MIDI, so you'll need a MIDI connector cable (or USB cable), and maybe a MIDI interface to connect to your computer if the synths don't have a USB port.

Then, you can trigger the synths with an "external MIDI track", given you have selected the correct MIDI port and the correct MIDI channel in both your synth and Logic.

Now, the synth will play the sound which your external MIDI channel sends to it. To capture this sound, you'll have to connect the audio outputs of your synth (the 1/4' jacks) to your Mac using an audio interface, going into an audio track.

This ist the correct order:
*External MIDI track* -> sends MIDI data through USB or MIDI cable to your synth -> Synth plays back -> audio comes out of the synth's outputs through 1/4 jacks into -> audio interface -> into your Mac -> into an *audio track*

I sort of figured on the MIDI portion of it for the DAW to receive or send MIDI CC messages to my instruments and hardware controller. To accomplish this I have two Midiman MIDI-to-USB converters... This (I believe will accomplish the trigger of the hardware synths).

Where I am a little confused is how to get the Audio from the 1/4" jacks on the Hardware Synths into my Mac so Core Audio can play it. I did purchase a (very) small Alesis Mixer w/ USB which I'm hoping will accomplish this... I'm trying to figure out if sending the 1/4" lines into the Alesis mixer and than connecting the mixer to my Mac via USB will allow me to hear the sound from Core Audio?

Hey Guys...

I want to simplify my question...

Will the Alesis MultiMix6 w/ USB allow me to plug my drum machine into it and then run the USB cable straight into my computer giving me both the ability to record the "audio track" within Logic Pro and at the same time hear the drum machine/audio through my core audio speakers?

I really need some direction as I've never done this before. Thanks!

OK... I follow you on the MIDI part... I just tried to insert an "external instrument" and my midi lights started to light up on my m-audio USB midi ports.

But I'm still not clear on how to get the 1/4" audio/outputs from my Drum Machine into my Mac Pro...

I know the MultiMix6 has a USB port on the back which I have running into my Mac Pro... How can I get the sound to play through my Speakers on my Mac Pro like/along with the Virtual Instruments?

(Let me know if you aren't following me on what I'm trying to accomplish)

Thanks!

Question:

I take it you have a set of decent external speakers plugged into the Mac Pro, right?

My question is... isn't the Alesis MultiMix6 a full fledged audio interface?

If you're using Logic Nine you set the Preferences/Audio/Input to the Alesis as it should be your primary recording interface. The output can be set to the Mac's built-in audio. Then the audio outs of the drum machine, (as well as any other audio outs) are plugged into the Alesis.

But here's the thing... why do you spend money on a mixer/audio interface and then try and use the cheap built-in audio of the Mac for anything? The Alesis is designed to be the center hub of the studio.

Your speakers should be plugged into the audio interface so that when using Logic the Alesis is both the Main input and Main output, your audio will sound better. If you need to monitor the Macs output maybe you can set it up in the Mac's audio setup. (monitor the mac through the USB connection.)
