Your best bet is to restore your iPhone to its factory settings. This erases all the data and settings on your phone (hopefully you synced it recently and backed up your data), but it can solve a lot of problems. Normally, you can just sync your iPhone and click the Restore button in iTunes, but if it won't turn on, you need a different technique:
Plug the iPhone's USB cable into the dock connector, but not into your computer
Hold down the iPhone's Home button
Now plug the other end of the USB cable into your computer
This will open iTunes, put the iPhone into recovery mode, and let you completely restore the iPhone.
I was having this problem with my phone I was checking my bank account and i went back to check the time and it wouldn't turn on. Your advice helped thanks!
I know this is an old post, but I have some information that might help anyone who is experiencing this problem of the iPhone 4/4S arbitrarily restarting or turning off and having trouble coming back on.
First of all (at least in my case), performing a "hard" reboot of the iPhone by holding the home and power buttons for 10 seconds is not really a fix. It may get your device to restart, but it doesn't address the core issue.
Also, this issue (at least, the issue I've been having) is not Apple's fault.
The problem my iPhone 4S was having (and that yours may be having as well) is that it is simply running out of space. Every time my iPhone's available storage space (i.e. the "hard" drive) is reduced below 500 megabytes, it starts doing this random shutting down/restarting thing.
If this is the cause of your iPhone's problem, you can fix it simply by deleting documents or apps that take up a lot of space. You can easily find which apps are the worst offenders in terms of storage space usage by going to the Settings app => General => Usage => Manage Storage. Having a large collection of music or (especially) videos can cause this problem to recur frequently. You can avoid it by leaving your purchased audio and video files in iCloud (where all of your iTunes and App Store purchases are by default) and only downloading them to your device when you need them.
Once you remove enough files and/or apps so that you have at least 1 gigabyte of free storage space on your iPhone, the problem should stop occurring. Also, I can't speak from experience, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if running out of adequate storage space would cause a similar problem on any iOS device, no matter which version it is (e.g. iPhone or iPad, iPhone 4, 5, 6 or whatever).
It is actually (probably) not a design flaw in either the hardware or the software. It is more likely that your device is simply running out of storage space. You can check if this is the case by going to Settings >> General >> Usage >> Storage.
If it shows there that you have less than 1GB of space, try deleting large files or apps that consume lots of space. You can see how your iPhone's storage space is being used (up) broken down by app, by going to "Manage Storage" under the storage section of the Settings >> General >> Usage page.
Thank you so much for the help! It worked for me when I had the same problem. =)
yes io tried this and my problem was solved thank you
Thanks for the info!
Do you know how can I restart my phone if the Home button is broken?
I know it's a really old post, but I just have the same problem, did you were able to solve it? with a broken power button
This helped me alot thank you !!!🙂
Thanks Lawrence,
It worked for me. But I had to be really patient : after the Apple logo appeared, I waited for 2 more minutes to see the home screen, which remained frozen (did not react to any button or touch) for 1 more minute and worked properly after that.
If anyone's having this problem try holding the power and home button at the same time for 30-60 seconds. This got mine working and might fix your problem
Thank you so much, this worked for me in the first go
Thank you.
thank you, it works.
