If its charged, you may try to push the home button (front bottom) and the top button on the top right of the phone AT THE EXACT SAME TIME....

It might take a few times to get the timing right.

Once you do this your phone will reset and power on.

When I did this, I did not lose any of my data.

    Good Luck!!!

Yes, it will happen again. Just like Windows or Mac OS X will occasionally crash. And you recover the same way. You can reduce the chance of a crash by turning off the phone for a couple of minutes once a week or so.

I had the exact same problem today. My iPhone 4S was working perfectly fine, the battery was at 45% and I was surfing the google maps. I placed the phone aside a few minutes and when I tried to use it again, it wouldn't turn on at all. I thought maybe the battery was drained even though it was at 45% when I stopped using it a few minutes before. I decided to plug it to the charger and checked back on it 2 hours later. It still had a black screen and would not turn on at all. I take excellent care of my phone (has a bumper protector and I even place it inside a special small bag for added protection when not in use) so I was beginning to think my phone was defective and "dead".

I decided to visit this page and I'm glad I did. Thank you so much for your advise.  It worked!!! All I did was; hold the home and sleep/wake up button at the same time for 30 seconds and like "magic" the apple emblem appeared on the screen and my phone was back on. I did this while my phone was connected to the regular charger. I did not have to connect it to a computer. Again, THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge!!!!

Hi there, My iphone 4 decided to turn itself off last night so i came onto this forum to see what to do. I held down the wake/sleep buttons and sure enough the picture of "plug into itunes" picture came on so I followed instructions and did a restore on my phone. It took 3 hours plugged in. after it had finished my iphone switched off and now wont go on at all.... ? any advice please?

I see you are solving everybody's problem so here's mine. I woke up Christmas morning with my battery full 100% put it in my pocket took it out 10 min later it was on 8% so I put it back on the charger but it continued to die while on the charger. It says its charging but it is not. So it completely died and it wouldn't turn back on. I charged all day christmas with different ports cables and all. Even put it into dfu mode restored it the apple logo would come up and it would load the firmware but right after it was done it would go right back to the charge logo. Around 11 at night it turned on by itself with 95% battery but would not charge again and continued to die when charging i turned it off to try and save the battery but when I woke up it was dead. I charged it from 4pm-10pm and it turned on again but now it is stuck on 1% and will not go any further then this. I have tried everything from resets to restores and nothing works.

Most likely you have a bad battery, but it could be a bad charger. Charge it only with the wall charger, not with your computer USB port. If it is a bad battery Apple will replace the battery for $79 if it is out of warranty, free if it is within the 1 year warranty or 2 year AppleCare plan.

Thanks to Larryone! He saved my iphone!

I tried every suggestion I read from page one 'til I get to his post on the 5th page(I guess).

I tried connecting the usb cord to the phone then press the Sleep Button and Home Button at the same time while pushing the cord to the phone gently. It worked magnificently.

I tried the rebooting technique for over 20 times but nothing happened.

Yea I checked the serial number for the phone and it was still under warranty so I made an appointment with the apple store and they couldn't figure it out either so they gave me A brand new one.

No weirder than rebooting your PC, which is what you just did.
