OMG! I can't believe this worked! After what I thought was a dead battery turned into a weird series of malfunctions, I really believed I had probably just beat my poor phone to death. Just as a kick, I thought I would google something of a description and came across a lot of people with the same problems. All the talk about the 2 buttons being held down together seemed to have worked for most. 30 seconds later my beloved lock screen appeared, thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is a long thread, so it's not clear what suggestion worked. If it was holding the HOME and SLEEP buttons for 10 seconds until an Apple Logo appeared it simply means that iOS crashed, like a kernel panic on Unix or OS X, or a Blue Screen of Death in Windows. It happens to all computers at one time or another - remember, the iPhone is not a phone; it's a powerful, pocket-sized computer that can also make phone calls.

To make it less likely that this will happen at an inconvenient time you should periodically turn the phone off (Hold the Sleep button until a slider appears) for a few seconds, or do the HOME and SLEEP reboot when its convenient for you. Once every week or two should be sufficient.

My phone decided to turn itself off about two days ago, and I've tried every trick I've seen here but nothing works.

Not the home+lock button, not plugging it into the computer. iTunes doesn't even recognize it, and plugged into the wall charger, it just lights up with the red battery sign but after hours and hours it still won't turn on. It's happened to me once before, and after three days it just randomly came back. Is there anywhere to turn it back on?

    Hi Lawrence,

I'm experiencing a similar situation. I got the iphone to turn on, but it keeps saying "Searching" (like looking for service) and the battery button shows the plug (as if it was fully charged, which is not). I can see my icons, but if I press one which requires internet (wifi  or service), it says "no internet connectiom".Then, it turns off again by itself.

Another error message that I obtained (only a few times of the hundrer I reset it ) is: cannot verify server identity iphone 4s. It looks as if it doesn't recognize me (nor my user, email, service, wi fi, anything...)

Thanks in advance for your help, I'm so worried. I'd really appreciate your assistance on this.

    Carina.

You have some strange symptoms. Either your firmware is corrupt, your phone is jailbroken (which is a form of corruption), or you have a hardware failure.

Connect the phone to the latest version of  iTunes on your computer (Update iTunes first if you don't have v11) and Restore it by clicking on the button with the phone's name, then the Restore button.

When prompted, set up as a new phone. If the same problems persist its a hardware problem; if they are gone it was a firmware problem. You can then try restoring your backup. If the problem returns you have a corrupt backup.

    Thanks Lawrence for your reply.

I did that, update itunes, but I'm just wondering if this could be a battery issue. Cause when plugged to the wall, it turns on, does NOT recognize me, but turns on.

When plug into computer, it hardly turns on, and itunes does not detect the iphone.

But, every time I unplugged, it turns off.

Also, being plugged to the wall, after some minutes, it turns off by itself...

Yes, that sounds like a bad battery. If you have access to an Apple store they will replace the battery under warranty, or, if the phone is out of warranty for $79 in the US and probably a similar price in other countries. There are also 3rd party shops who will replace the battery for less, or you can get battery replacement kits on the Internet to do it yourself.

I'll try that..the weird thing is that it doesn't recognize me nor the carrier nor wifi ...don't know why... not even itunes recognize the iphone, that's why I can't do much from there.....

one of those times I get to turn the phone on, and asked for my apple id, it doesnt' validate the password, it doesn't recognize me as a valid user....
