I have an iPhone 4 which is not turning on, and none of the tips mentioned are working. First let me state that I have never jailbroken my iPhone, it has never gotten wet, dropped, opened up etc. Even all the accessories - wall charger, battery, earbuds etc - are original Apple ones.

It was connected to a wall charger when I saw that it was displaying the 'Connect to iTunes' message. As soon as I disconnected the wall charger, it switched off (or at least stopped displaying anything). So I connected it to iTunes. It did not get recognized at all. However, after 10 seconds or so, Apple logo came on, stayed for 5-6 seconds and then went away. This Apple logo coming on and going off repeatedly is the only response I get when phone is connected to iTunes. When phone is not connected to iTunes, it is completely dead, no display at all, whatever I try.

I tried all the usual stuff:

    - iTunes version is latest, all required services are up and running. Device is iPhone 4 on iOS 6.0.1

    - I have an iPad 2, iPhone 3GS and an iPod Nano. I am able to connect all to iTunes on my computer and sync without any problems.

    - Usual tips such as pressing Home+Sleep button together etc have no effect at all if iPhone is not connected to iTunes. If it is connected to iTunes, then Apple logo coming on and off pattern is repeated, whatever I try to do.

    - Device does not go into recovery mode as well. I must have tried hundreds of times.

    - If I connect to wall charger, after some time I get the message 'Connect to iTunes' which obviously goes off as soon as I disconnect the wall charger (to connect to iTunes).

    - I have tried to fully discharge the iPhone, kept it unused for over 2 months. Obviously, there is no way I can confirm that it is fully discharged as no such display comes on anymore on the phone.

    - Tried it on a friend's laptop and iMac. No luck. same behaviour is repeated.

I contacted Apple Support but they are refusing to even look at it. They say that you purchased it in US, so we will not even look at it here (I am no longer in USA).

I am at my wits end. No idea what to do. It is an expensive device - a new iPhone retails at $900 here - so I cannot just go out an buy one. It is a very strange experience for me that a device famed for its reliability will just stop working.

I hope somebody out there has experienced this and found a cure. Please help!

You probably have a bad battery. See if you can find an independent shop who will replace it.

Thanks Lawrence. I will give it a shot.

Any idea why batteries go bad? My iPhone 3GS is two years older, and has had no such problem so far.

Minuscule manufacturing defects? Repeated shocks? Overheating? Lithium batteries are rather delicate. Also, the half-life of the battery is speced at 500 full charge cycles.

Now what?! Holding the buttons down worked a few times this week, but now doesn't. Why is this happening?? How do I get my 3 month old phone to work??

Changed the battery. Exactly the same behaviour as earlier ... no change at all.

    What else can I do?

I was just reading through this question because my sons iphone turned off and wouldn't turn back.  I pressed the home button and the off button for 15 seconds and then released as instructed.  I waited, and the apple appeared.  I did have it connected to the computer.  Thanks for posting, you saved me a lot of time!

You seem like you know your way around these phones, so let me tell you what I'm dealing with, in hopes that you'll have a solution..

I have an iphone 4s.  It died, so I turned it off, and tried to charge it.  It never moved past 1%.  I plugged it into my PC, and itunes said that the device was stuck in recovery mode.  I restored the device, then installed installed an earlier back up from icloud.  Everything appeared to be normal, but the charge still stayed at 1%.  I thought it was frozen, so I unplugged the phone, and turned it off.  Again, the phone wouldn't power back on.

I plugged the phone back in and restored it, again.  The restore successfully completed, but this time, the phone didn't restart, and it's still not charging past 1%.  I have no idea what to do.  I tried everything on this thread, and I have no success!  The nearest apple store is 2 hours from me.  Please help!

Try Holding The Off Button For 5secs then Without Releasing It Hold The Home Button 10 secs then release you finger off the off button and hold the home button for 5secs...Worked On my IPod

Your battery has most likely gone bad. Unfortunately the best solution is a trip to an Apple store. Be sure to make an appointment.

You can also arrange a repair by mail, but you will be without the phone for a few days.

after letting it sit, all night..  it came on this morning.  However, battery is still at 1%.  You don't think it has anything to do with corrupt data in my latest back up?  I know I'm reaching, here, but it's just puzzling how out of no where the thing isn't charging!  But I guess that's how it goes, huh?  ;-)

You can test for corrupt firmware by restoring the phone as New without restoring your backup. If the problem remains it is almost certainly a bad battery.
