iPad used as an ereader

I use my iPad for reading books. I'm curious as to how many on this forum do so.

I don't find it tiring on my eyes, but I've heard that it's not desirable as an ereader.

Just curious.

I have both Sony Reader and iPad. I think the screen in Sony Reader is fantastic and it is a really great reading device, the screen really is as if you were reading a real paperback.

However I have always found it very difficult to concentrate to read, a real paperback or Sony Reader, maybe I have a mild ADHD or something.

However somehow the screen of iPad helps me to concentrate more easily on reading, I don't know why. I have no problems reading from computer screens either..

I love my iPad as an e-reader. I'm able to adjust the brightness to suit my needs and through accessibility I ca switch to white text on black background mode for reading in absolute darkness. The only drawback is reading outdoors in direct sunlight...but I very rarely read under those circumstances. i books is great and there are apps for all the other most popular readers....kindle, nook, stanza, etc.

I don't have one of those dedicated ereaders.

But I have been using a laptop to read ebooks for years, all varieties including using the kindle for the pc app.

I've only had my iPad for a few days now, but so far I love it for reading - it's a easy to handle as a thin hard cover paper book, it has backlighting for nighttime reading, not tied to a power cord and the releated heat of charging the laptop, and there are apps for kindle, nook, etc., as well as the iBooks and all my ebooks, love it!

I started using my old Palm to read books a long time ago. So for me de iPad is a big upgrade!

I use Kindle and eReader mostly.

I also have been eReading for years, starting with the Palm. I used to be a big fan of eReader (using the Fictionwise site), but software updates have all but stopped, and Fictionwise has become more trouble than it's worth (read the eReader app comments). My eBook apps of choice are iBooks, nook, and Kindle, which I use on both iPad and iPhone.

Except for outside in direct sunlight, where a dedicated electronic book will generally do better, the ability to have one device for reading, surfing, email, games, etc. makes the iPad a better choice. Plus, as I noted above, with the iPad you actually get access to the nook and Kindle libraries as well as others, meaning you have a better selection.

I use an iPad, a Kindle and my wife's Sony e-Reader. All have their advantages and disadvantages. The iPad is great where there is little or no ambient light but is hopeless in direct sunlight.

As the Kindle and the Sony have no backlight they need a strong light source to be used. They both perform perfectly in direct sunlight. The Kindle has a pin sharp display and is my preferred device. It also weighs a lot less than an iPad and IMHO is easier to use.

I'm with Tamara, I sold my Sony reader after trying the iPad for ebook reading. Initially I never expected to read on my iPad having been convinced e-ink was better but the screen clarity is better, the ability to read in the dark without extra bits of kit and the instant downloads on the iPad won me over.

I don't understand the whole 'the iPad is too heavy to read on' claim - it's lighter than any hard back book.
