I have iOS4.1 and the wensite shows 4.2 is available, but when I connect to iTunes it displays "Your iPod software is up to date" and shows it has 4.1. How do you get the new update?
I am having the same problem, tells me that the software is up to date. There isn't really much point updating anyway because hardly anything supports the iPod Touch 2G.
Update your iTunes to 10.1 then install iOS 4.2. It's available for download. I'm going to wait a day or two before I update so the sever won't be overloaded.
I have a problem, today still i cannot update iOs 4.2 to my iPod touch 2g, all i have is a message that software 2.2.1 is current version!
i have downloaded update from this site (
http://www.redmondpie.com/download-ios-4.2.1-iphone-4-3gs-3g-ipad-ipod-touch-fin al-version/) directly and still nothing!
i have downloaded a new iTunes... and nothing!
what can I do else?
It sounds like you really have a 1G iPod. You can identify your model here. The one 1G can only go to iOS 3.1.

To get iOS 3.1 for the 1G go here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052 Some users have had to use different browsers to get .the link "Purchase the iOS 3.1....." to work in the above link
Same happened to me then I noticed if you look at the page where the 4.2 announcement is, the footnote says 4.2 is for Gen 3 & up NOT gen 2 & up. Thats why in itunes it shows your IPOD is up to date. Just yet another Apple screw up. I sent in a feedback form to notify them of the inconsistency on their website & asked if that means us Gen 2 users are forever hung out to dry w/the crap performance & bugs that IOS 4 gave us...
This Apple page clearly says iOS 4.2 is applicable to iPod 2G and later:
http://www.apple.com/ios/ Many users have successfully installed iOS 4.2 on 2G iPods. Just not that Many of the iOS 4.2 feature are not available on the 2G. See:
