unable to import panasonic into iMovie 08

Just bought camrecorder HDC-SD300 Panasonic. Tried to import films into iMovie 08 7.1.4 (585). It imports normally, but just at the end, I've a message "unable to import - check imported files, etc"
New file has been opened, but nothing in it.
Panasonic said that all is in order with them, and problem is here with my iMac.
So where is the problem ?
Thanks for help !

Hi

Suddenly - not capturing - usually indicates that the Mac has no place to put it.

• Free Space on Start-up hard disk ? How much ?
less than 1.5Gb - Neither Mac OS or iDVD or other applications will run OK - or even crach
5 - 10Gb ==> Slow and instable
more than 25Gb - my minimum to get it to work OK + 13.5Gb per hour material to Capture (SD 4x3 video from miniDV tape)

• Use of external hard disks ?

USB/USB2 - not good - Use FireWire

MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted --- UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange do not work with video !

In the meantime I discovered an other problem, which, I think, should be the reason why iMovie doesn't work correctly.
I bought time ago the application to change 10.4.11 into 10.5. Coudn't charge it, and I passed it to a friend. Problem is that now, the strat-up hard disk has been fixed with os 10.5, and I do not know how to come back to 10.4. I tried to restart puter with 10.4, but it stays 10.5
Should there be a conflict ?

You can't have two Mac OS versions on same hard disk partition. Will not work.

BUT - You can divide one hard disk into two partitions and have one Mac OS version on each.

That's my set-up

PowerBook G4 - Mac OS X.3.9

External 1.5T into two partitions of about 700Gb each and
• Mac OS X.4.11 on one - and -
• Mac OS X.5.? on the other one

This let's me start from what OS I like.

Under Apple (menu)/ System Preferences / Start-up hard disks - I select from which I want to start - or -

During Up-start - keeping alt-key down and select Mac OS of choise.

BUT - Some external hard disks CAN NOT DO THIS
• Western Digital can't (got 4 of them - I know)
• Lacie works
• HAS TO BE - Mac OS Extended formatted ! !
• MUST BE - FireWire - NO USB/USB2 can do this ! !
