Q: Printing via Airprint and Airport Express

Hi I also use an airport express. I use a free program though. Called Airyunes Activator. Apple really needs to support their express or iPhone software!! Requiring my MacBook to be on is not too cool..

This thread is for those using Airport Express not just wifi printers. That apple doesn't add this support to their own products is shameful.

The printer does not care what router is used.

AirPrint talks to AirPrint capable printers over wifi. It does not talk to printers connected via USB.

For all of us that have a windows computer, the airport, and iPhones/iPads- there is No Way To Print Directly! You need to install bonjour and then AirPrint onto the windows computer to serve as a "print server" for the iPad/iPhone! Once you install and run on windows, your devices WILL recogize the printer.

Apple needs to install a simple print server into the time capsule exterme/ airport for DIRECT capability. Otherwise you must buy an AirPrint capable printer which is an obvious apple / company business merger...

Are you suggesting that Apple has already purchased HP, Canon, Brother, Epson and Lexmark?

You may find PrinterShare to be a better solution for printing from iPhone/iPad to a wifi enabled printer. I've been using it for a couple of years. Many, many more printers are supported on PrinterShare. The main benefit of this app is you print directly to the wifi printer without the need of having your Mac share the printer.

It is simply not possible for Apple to add this functionality. Most printer vendors only release drivers for Intel platforms, so an Airport Express would not be able to run them. As a matter of fact, similar hardware with open source software (openwrt) doesn't work either.

Sorry guys, decades of cheapskates in the printing industry working hard to save money on hardware definetly contributed to this situation. Not unlike the winmodem situation..

There is an app for that. It's called PDF Printer Driver. Little bit expensive, but very useful. It creates virtual PDF printer which you can use in any app which has Print option.

I got one my self. It works.

Too expensive and not always the best solution. With the PDF Printer Driver app I can create PDF documents from any app which can print, and I can print them later, or just save as PDFs. And I an send PDFs to another computer to print them. But of course, if all you need is just a printout, then AirPrint server is OK.

Yes, it may be expensive, but compares to the cost of a cheap AirPrint printer.

When you print a photograph from the iPad's Photos App, does it print postcard-size, or does it fill the page?

What voltage and current does the AC adapter put out?  I am looking for a battery powered AirPrint printer.  If I could feed an XPrintServer from batteries, I could use my old HP Deskjet 450.
