I was browsing the forums seeing if people were having issues with IOS 4.2 on their iPads (I upgraded on Thursday) and found this lively thread.

In support of side readers, yes, I read my iPad in bed on my side at a 45 degree angle also. It keeps the brightness of the screen totally facing me and less likely to disturb my spouse in the bed. So I do like to lock the screen in portrait mode for this. I will admit that when I heard that the screen orientation lock function was going to transition from the hardware switch to a software control with 4.2, I thought, "oh, gee, I wonder why they have to change that". I use the mute switch on my iPhone frequently, but can't really see myself muting the iPad when it's so easy to turn the volume down to 0 with the switch right below it.

But I have EASILY made the transition to locking the screen with the software control, so... it became a non-issue for me very quickly. Even as this thread tells me how I might possibly revert to 3.2.2 (though, my trash has not been emptied and the restore file is not there), I certainly don't feel a need to do so.... certainly not about the screen orientation.

The mute switch and the volume control have different functions. For example, listen to some music and flick the mute switch. Does anything happen to the sound?

Well, yes, I understand... that the mute function only mutes certain sounds and not everything. There's been plenty of commentary about that.

I understand they made the change to have consistency in the IOS across devices. But I do think it would have been nice to set a preference setting for what you want the button to do and many people are perhaps submitting feedback to Apple in that regard. I might as well.

The reason why someone want to remove 4.2.1 is because it's flawed big time.
It's not just the switch (mute), but other things as well, such as lagging, wi-fi problems,, and graphic/screen.

What lagging? What Wi-Fi problems? What graphic/screen? (whatever that means)

Sorry you are having those issues, but don't assume it's a universal experience just because you or a couple people you know are having them. Why don't you contact Apple to see if they can figure out what your problem is.

Another thing - I had a bad install of iOS4.1 a while back on my iPod and did a restore (not from backup but clean restore) After I did that it cleared up the issues I was having. A restore might be worth a try.

"live with it" boy that is constructive. Many many people who have bought iPads or iPhone 4s are the first Apple Product they ever owned. Many coming from the PC World, have learning curves. I know I do. I am disappointed with one step forward, two steps backwards so far with the iPad, does that make me a Troll or Whiner?

If you have a lock button and it used to work, it is expected it will work with updated software. If an SD Card CCK or PNY approved one worked previously, one would expect it to work with updated software. These are just not complaints, they are as much frustrations and questions. My iPad out of the box came with a 4x4 flip out instruction manual. Basically how you turn it on. Pretty useless.

Are you that accepting of these problems? Is this something die hard Apple Users have just become to accept as the norm? Why participate in a USERs Forum if back and forth and ideas and frustrations cannot be expressed? It is not like there are any Apple Representative Instructed forums to answer these questions. Listing how something is supposed to work and how it actually is NOT working as described by 100s of thousands of users is Relevant.

I am sure this post will be removed by the Community Host, because it makes sense and it not rude like many of your posts, I guess that is allowed

Did you also test battery life? I can see my battery draining second by second now - even when I only have one or two apps open.
