IDVD Burned DVD will not play on another CD player, only on MAC

Been awhile since I burned a DVD. I am using Memorex DVD-R (recordable, 16X, 4.7 GB, 120 min). I successfully burned the DVD and it played successfully on my Powerbook. When played on my CD player, I got a message that the DVD "is not recognized" and thus it would not play? Is this the disc (DVD-R, or brand?) or did I miss a formatting step. Seems in the past there was a step to format the disc? My CD player is fairly new??

Hi Floats

Welcome. Did you happen to burn the dvd thru iDvd? or did you burn a data dvd? Data dvd's won't play on most set top dvd players but will on your mac. As for the brand, do a search on this forum for Memorex. You'll see it's not highly recommended. Suggest Verbatim or Maxell instead of the current brand you are using. Might also want to burn first to a disc image from the file menu in iDvd. Test said image with apple's dvd player app. Assuming it plays fine, then use Toast or apple's disc utility to lower the burn speed to 4x. Hopefully that will make for fewer read or write errors on the finished dvd. Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck!

I am not sure how I recorded it as I am sure I just followed the prompts from IDVD. It all went rather well until I tried it on the CD? Your response leads me to believe that its the CD. Can I ask what you use, either DVD-R, or DVD+R? I read that some newer CD players and burners cant read DVD-R. I believe the DVDs I have are from a while ago when I last burned some pictures and don't recall this being an issue.
Thanks

When you say CD, do you really mean DVD? I'm assuming so because iDvd simply will not burn video or audio to a CD. I use Verbatim Dvd-R mostly. Sometimes I'll also use Maxell. But from past experience (mostly on older Mac stock S-Drives) I've learned to steer clear of Memorex products as well as a number of bulk media products.

Once in a long while I'll also use Verbatim Dual Layer Dvd's if I have an exceptionally long presentation (which is nearly always plus + media).

If you followed only the prompt/s within iDvd, then you can only burn to a Dvd. Inserting a CD will simply make the app reject the media and spit it right back out at you. It'll keep doing this until you insert media it can write to.

Bottom line is that if you use Verbatim or Maxell instead of Memorex, I think you'll have much better success. But if not just come on back.
