Photo descriptions not showing on Facebook

I thought the descriptions I give my photos would show up in Facebook when I share them. I'm not seeing anything in Facebook.

The descriptions are kept in the iPhoto database files until the file is exported out of iPhoto with the option to include the title and keywords and other metadata.

Then the files will have the descriptions in the IPTC Description field where other applications can read and display them if they can read that data.

I did check it, but the new iPhoto has the wonderful share button that with just one click put photos on Facebook, if I'm forced to use every time the export option (I use this option with the old iPhoto, sice I didn't have the share button on the right bottom) makes the "share" button useless and the procedure longer. Is like if I'm back on iPhoto '08

i am having the same problem. i was annoyed that iPhoto '09 didn't include my descriptions (as captions) when i "share" them on facebook, so i asked the employees at the apple store if the new iPhoto '11 had this capability, and they told me it did. so i spent the $$ for iLife '11. and guess what? the photo descriptions DO NOT export! c'mon apple...how hard is this? when i "export" to shutterfly, it sends the descriptions/metadata. but we no longer have the option to "export" to facebook and include that info. if you can't make "sharing" to facebook include descriptions, then let us export. this is REALLY aggravating after i spent hours adding descriptions in iPhoto. i refuse to manually enter captions one by one on a hundred plus photos in facebook. does anyone have any further info/insight about this?

I just figured out what the problem is. In iPhoto 11 there is a field that shows up when you click the info button. This field prompts you to "Add a description...". The problem is that this field is NOT the field that is synced to the description field in FaceBook. THAT field is the title field that is by default filled in with the filename of the photo. If you type your description there it will sync to FB. This is extremely confusing but I was able to get it to work. One last thing that happened with ALL my photos where I had to fix the description this way is that when I changed the title field from the file name to the actual description I wanted. I did not take it the first time. Instead it changed the title to "untitled" then when I did it a second time it finally changed to what I wanted. I don't know id this second issue is just something weird that happened to me or if it's a universal problem with changing the title from iPhoto 11. I mention it because I wasted a lot of time changing the titles twice since it did not take the first time. Try it on one or two photos first and if you are having this same problem then delete the titles first, wait for them to sync with FB then type in your new descriptions.

Hope this helps someone.

Alright, so the Title field is seemingly what iPhoto syncs with the Facebook Description field. Nothing much we can do about that.

This insight is not much use if you either don't want your iPhoto titles messed with, or already have hundreds of iPhoto descriptions that would take an eon to transfer to the titles.

I would love to know if there are any exporting tools out there for sharing photos from iPhoto 11 with Facebook that DO sync the iPhoto 11 and Facebook Description fields.

I'm committed to iPhoto 11, but not necessarily to the built-in sharing functionality if there is a better alternative. I would also be interested in hearing from someone at Apple why they chose to sync the iPhoto Title field rather than the description. Insight into this might help me accept the need to use Titles for descriptions. Currently, it just irks me.

Thanks

I have read in one or two places that if you upload the photos through Facebook, rather than through iPhoto, that what is entered in the "Descriptions" field will show up in the captions field on Facebook. However, one of these mentions said that this used to be the case. I have tried it and it did not work for me. Does anybody know if there is someway to bring back this feature, such as by changing an option/settings? Was it a change on Facebook's end or iPhoto's end?

Personally, I would much prefer to upload through Facebook because I don't want my album (on Facebook) being changed/deleted if I ever made a change/deleted the iPhoto album. I guess it's a sense of security for me.

Anybody have any insight on this method?

That would be a question for Facebook support not iPhoto support

I too seek a fix for this iPhoto 2011 bug, but unfortunately it is now July 2011 and no fix appears to be forthcoming, despite of all the info on it in Apple's won forums. Therefore, the best I can suggest is that all reading this do as I did -- file a bug report with Apple at the following URL:

https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn

You just need an Apple ID and 5 minutes of your time. Be sure to generate an Apple System Profile report and upload that along side your bug report, otherwise Apple will just bother you about submitting it 3 days later.

And yes, it is important that you too file a report even though I have, since Apple seems to give priority to bugs based on how many people file the same report. You unfortunately cannot reference an existing bug report. You have to file a new report. But Apple keeps track of them and gives them priority accordingly.

In the meantime, until this bug gets fixed, we are forced to type photo descriptions in the photo TITLE field in iPhoto (which I agree is really frustrating because it is non-intuitive).
