Icons in upper right corner of monitor when I press command, option, etc

When working in various applications I notice that when I perform a key command the act of pressing command, option, fn, etc triggers a OS command that is messing up what I'm actually trying to do. The command is accompanied by an icon in the upper right corner of my screen. What is this and how do I turn it off?
