Buzzing coming from BOSE Companion 2 Speakers with Macbook Pro only

Hi all,

My set-up is 28" Apple LED Cinema Display Screen, Macbook Pro and a set of Bose Companion 2 speakers. I've noticed recently that when I connect the speakers into my Macbook Pro via the headphone socket, and then switch on the speakers, I hear a humming / buzzing sound. The speakers are only running at say 30% of full volume....if I turn up even more, the buzzing gets louder.

I've tried the speakers with my iPod Classic in the same room and absolutely no problem, no buzzing sound. It only occurs when I connect into my Macbook Pro....so it's not the speakers. Seems it's something to do with the Macbook Pro. Could it be a fault with the socket?

When the Macbook Pro is not connected to the speakers and I'm using the in-built speakers instead, there's no buzzing sound.

Has anyone experienced this before? Does anyone have any suggestions what it might be?

Thanks in advance.

Often it is a grounding problem in the interconnection of all the peripherals. I would try something like this RadioShack isolation transformer. Hopefully you can find an equivalent in HK, probably much cheaper.

This problem occurs often with external powered speakers and an external display. Often, the external display wiring induces the sound problem, so it often goes away when the display is disconnected. Sometimes running the computer on battery only fixes the buzz.
