iPhone 4 video not playing via AirPlay

iPhone 4 video not playing via AirPlay

I have videos recorded with my iPhone 4 that I would like to play directly out of the Photos app. I have updated every component (iPhone, latest Apple TV (mini), Apple network) to the latest available versions.

But I can only hear audio on my Apple TV, no video.

Playing videos and music from the iPod app works fine.

Is this a known limitation?

I am in the same boat. I have an Apple TV 2nd gen, iTunes 10.1, iOS4.2.1 on my iphone 4 and can only stream audio from the phone to the apple tv. I am going from the photo app as well. Please help.

If you are trying to AirPlay video shot on your iPhone from your camera roll then you are out of luck. You can't.

why? That's for apple to come out and say.

It it true that you can not stream iphone video via airplay to apple tv; that is disappointing and we will hope it is added later. I can send iphone still photos to apple tv however.

I can only play video if I download it to my Mac first, then share it using the iTunes photo share feature. (Be sure to check include video) I am very disappointed by this limitation as well.

I am trying to play a Netflix movie from Iphone 4 to appletv. Does not work either.....

Seems weird that you can't yet, but you can always upload to YouTube as a private video, then AirPlay with the YouTube app.

FYI, some videos that don't AirPlay from YouTube.com using the browser, will work if played from the YouTube app.

This is a pretty big oversight.
I shoot lots of video on my iPhone 4 and would love to Airplay it over to AppleTV and show everyone...

Hopefully Apple will fix it soon.

For all the hype about how easily you can airplay from your IPhone to Apple TV I agree that Apple missed the most important feature of this capability. Playing your recorded videos directly instead of having to physically transfer them to a PC and then playing it. Its weird that they allow photos but not videos. I hope the various teams (Iphone & Apple TV) work together & provide this capability soon.

Also they need to better educate their Apple store employees. We bought the apple tv because the store employee confirmed that I can play my recorded videos via airplay. I might have to just return it & wait till I see an update that provides this capability.

i got it right once, ut something has changed since then. might have been from youtube app on iPad, but not sure. Apart from big oversight, Airplay is simply not doing what it says on the can. Apple claim we can stream all the video, photo or adio content already on the device to airplay. not happening. VERY disappointed. seems the Apple release strategy is moving away from quality and right first time to a more MS approach. I.e. get the market share then fix the problems...

I'm pretty sure this feature is not enabled because iPhone videos are not compressed when they're shot. Thus, streaming that large of an uncompressed video file would be a gargantuan task in nearly all of the links that make up the streaming chain (wireless, codecs, compression, etc.).

This is just a theory.

The strange thing is that my iPod Touch 4 works just fine with my own videos and photos but my in-laws iPhone4s don't. My guess is that they missed it and will have it fixed in the next update. If the iPod Touch can do it the phone should also.

I was having the same problem with playing video from ipad2 to apple tv (all having the latest versions). There was audio but no video and here is what fixed my problem :

Tap the ipad start button twice. All the apps will be shown at the bottom of the screen. Slide left and find the airplay icon and tap it once, select the apple tv and below that you will have the 'Mirroring' icon, which should be showing 'Off'. Tap it once to "On' position.

All my videos are now streaming fine to apple tv through the apps as well as safari. I have'nt checked recorded videos, but I'm sure they will play too. The only thing is that mirroring will play it both on your ipad as well as apple tv.
