AirPrint Information and FAQ

All, I figured I'd start one of my famous FAQ threads here to help head off some of the problems. So with that being said, lets get started.

Q: What is AirPrint?
A: AirPrint enables printing from a supported iOS 4.2 device to supported AirPrint enabled printers. Today several HP models support AirPrint.

Apple AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356

Apple AirPrint Support Page:

HP AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://www.hp.com/go/airprint

HP AirPrint Support Page:
http://www.hp.com/sbso/printing/mac/hp-airprint.html

Q: I don't have one of the supported printers, is there any other way for me to get AirPrint to work?
A: Yes, there are several third party AirPrint Sharing Solutions for the Mac (although I am not personally endorsing any of them):

FingerPrint
http://www.collobos.com/

Printopia for Mac
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/

If you have a problem with a specific printer while using one of these applications, please direct the question to vendor that wrote the app.

Q: Does AirPrint work directly with any Printer?
A: No. At this time, only select models from HP work with Airprint.

Q: Can I share a printer from my Mac and print to it?
A: See the above question for the 3rd party products that enable AirPrint Sharing.

Q: Can I connect a USB printer to my AirPort BaseStation (Express, Extreme, TimeCapsule)?
A: This is not supported. See above.

Q: Can I use AirPrint with my older HP printers?
A: This is not supported by HP. See above.

Q: I have one of the supported printers that is supposed to work now, but I'm not seeing it. What's wrong?
A: Make sure you have updated to the latest firmware available. You can check in:

Tools->Web->Automatic Updates->Check for Product Updates.

Note that you may need to enable eWeb Services to see the updates.

Q: I have on of the printers that will be supported in the future (ie one of the Officejets), when will it be supported?
A: While at the moment the latest official answer is December 27th. I hope to be able to update this soon with an earlier date, but it will still be sometime in December.

Q: I have an iPhone 3G or a second gen iPod touch. I have iOS 4.2, but I am not seeing AirPrint, can you help?
A: AirPrint only shows up on iOS devices that support multitasking. While these devices have iOS 4.2 available for them, they do not support multitasking and hence do not support AirPrint.

Q: I still can't figure this out, what am I doing wrong?
A: Hopefully HP will have a support doc posted later today with pictures to help you work through the steps. I'll post a separate link to that document once its ready.

I will build on this list in this thread over time if you have questions that aren't answered here.

And while most of you from the Mac forums know this, I need to make it clear here as well: Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

YEEEEESSSSS!!!

Today it finally works like a charm!

I do not really know what happened ... I was still able to use the Apps, but ePrint Center told me, my printer was offline. So I simply switched it off and restarted it (like a Windows-machine ...). Then I took the update-routine again ... and there it was! Now the firmware is LRP1FN1048PR and everything's fine.

Thanks for your help!

Hi. Sorry if this question has already been covered somewhere.

Q. I have recently bought an HP Photosmart Premium and I'm finding it hard to print photos from my iPad onto A4. If I just print from the photo app the photo is printed out on 4x6 photo paper. If I use the ePrint app it prints in A4 but with a small border that I can't seem to get rid of. The only way I seem to be able to print a photo on an A4 sheet is by importing the photo into pages, resizing it to fit the page and then printing from there. Is there any easier methods or perhaps an app that could help with this? Thanks.

Stoney,

[HP iPrint Photo|http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hp-iprint-photo-3-0/id299531647?mt=8] should provide you with an easy way to print out borderless photo's on an A4 sized paper. The Photo's App will try to print to picture size (4x6, A6, or 3.5x5 depending on the region). As for ePrint, if you go into ePrinter Center you should be able to adjust your settings, but I'll double check that.

The HP app does not use a Mac as an intermediary, it prints directly to the Printer. And the App's name is [HP iPrint Photo|http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hp-iprint-photo-3-0/id299531647?mt=8], and its free. As for what the best option is, it depends on what you are trying to do.

The HP App will print directly from your iOS device to your Printer, but only prints Photos and a few document formats.
The free AirPrint options are free, and require you to share your printer from the Mac.
The paid AirPrint options cost, but may provide some additional support. They also require you to share your printer from the Mac.
There are some other options that are available in the App store, some print directly, some require a proxy, but the above three should meet any of your printing needs.

In your collective opinions...

OK, first its now the App you refereed to first is now called AirPrint-Activator. The previous one you mention contained Apple code which should not be redistributed. That also could be the reason for the post being removed. The MacWorld link you provide is dead as well.

But as I have pointed out in this thread in several places, HP iPrint Photo will give you a direct print experience for Photos and the text document formats it supports. It will also provide a scan experience if you are interested in that.

There are several alternatives for "Sharing" a printer so that AirPrint can see it. AirPrint Activator is the free version, that does essentially what the script you point to does, only provides a nicer UI on top of it. The two paid solutions, as I mention earlier in this thread provide a better experience (and more hand holding) in the setup, plus potential for support from the developers.

So it really comes down to if you want your Mac running in order to print from your iOS devices, or if you want to print directly. And if you want to have your Mac running, do you want the free or paid solutions.
