AirPrint Information and FAQ

All, I figured I'd start one of my famous FAQ threads here to help head off some of the problems. So with that being said, lets get started.

Q: What is AirPrint?
A: AirPrint enables printing from a supported iOS 4.2 device to supported AirPrint enabled printers. Today several HP models support AirPrint.

Apple AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356

Apple AirPrint Support Page:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html

HP AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://www.hp.com/go/airprint

HP AirPrint Support Page:
http://www.hp.com/sbso/printing/mac/hp-airprint.html

Q: I don't have one of the supported printers, is there any other way for me to get AirPrint to work?
A: Yes, there are several third party AirPrint Sharing Solutions for the Mac (although I am not personally endorsing any of them):

FingerPrint
http://www.collobos.com/

Printopia for Mac
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/

If you have a problem with a specific printer while using one of these applications, please direct the question to vendor that wrote the app.

Q: Does AirPrint work directly with any Printer?
A: No. At this time, only select models from HP work with Airprint.

Q: Can I share a printer from my Mac and print to it?
A: See the above question for the 3rd party products that enable AirPrint Sharing.

Q: Can I connect a USB printer to my AirPort BaseStation (Express, Extreme, TimeCapsule)?
A: This is not supported. See above.

Q: Can I use AirPrint with my older HP printers?
A: This is not supported by HP. See above.

Q: I have one of the supported printers that is supposed to work now, but I'm not seeing it. What's wrong?
A: Make sure you have updated to the latest firmware available. You can check in:

Tools->Web->Automatic Updates->Check for Product Updates.

Note that you may need to enable eWeb Services to see the updates.

Q: I have on of the printers that will be supported in the future (ie one of the Officejets), when will it be supported?
A: While at the moment the latest official answer is December 27th. I hope to be able to update this soon with an earlier date, but it will still be sometime in December.

Q: I have an iPhone 3G or a second gen iPod touch. I have iOS 4.2, but I am not seeing AirPrint, can you help?
A: AirPrint only shows up on iOS devices that support multitasking. While these devices have iOS 4.2 available for them, they do not support multitasking and hence do not support AirPrint.

Q: I still can't figure this out, what am I doing wrong?
A: Hopefully HP will have a support doc posted later today with pictures to help you work through the steps. I'll post a separate link to that document once its ready.

I will build on this list in this thread over time if you have questions that aren't answered here.

And while most of you from the Mac forums know this, I need to make it clear here as well: Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

Just trying to help.

This was a great thread, as I looking for printing solutions for iPad(s) not that I bought my wife one for Christmas.

Isn't funny how we will go out and spend $700 or more on an iPad and complain about an app that costs $5-10.

My question fro Andrew is: I have a Photosmart C7280 and want to get a AirPrint compatible replacement that prints photos as well as the C7280, but we still use the feeder tray a lot, what would you recommend? I know that the C7280 has the multiple ink cartridges, but I don't know how much of a difference it makes.

Thanks in advance!

The closest direct replacement for your C7280 is the HP Photosmart Premium Fax Wireless e-All-in-One C410a. It has pretty much everything the C7280 does, but adds AirPrint (and 802.11n support). And if you look for it on Amazon, its at an insanely low price of $159.99 (but only 2 left in stock). That's over $100 below any other price I've seen, and $140 below the HP.com price.

However don't be surprised if they disappear quickly, and I don't know the the seller is going to take back orders at that price.

Just trying to help.

Andrew,

Wondering if you could help me. I am having trouble getting my Ipad to print using airprint. When I select to print a docmument, my Ipad says printer not found. I have an HP Officejet 6500A plus, which I believe is on the list of available printers to use air print. My PC is printing fine to the printer, so I know it is working. I have a Netopia wireless DSL Modem. Curious to know if you have any suggestions. Do you have to set up the Ipad to see printers? New at this...Thanks for your help.

I'll check it out, thanks!

Andrew just a few final Qns...

You say the *Photosmart Premium Fax Wireless e-All-in-One C410a* (that's a mouthful!) has +pretty much+ everything the C7280 does.
Does that mean it's missing a few significant things that the C7280 has, or is it's featureset definitely a super-set of the C7280's?

Based on your knowledge of past release cycles, is a successor to the C410a likely this yr?
No point upgrading to it if another's coming along within the next 12mth! 🙂

Thank-you so much for all your help!

All the best,
Jed

It is essentially a superset. The big difference is it uses totally different cartridges, so any ink you already have will not work. The new cartridges it uses (564 series cartridges) are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, and Photo Black. The C7280 (02 series cartridges) uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, Light Magenta, and Black.

Just trying to help.

Charles,

First, make sure you Officejet has been updated to the latest firmware. The firmware that came with it out of the box does not have AirPrint yet. Second, you need to make sure your router is supporting Bonjour. I have not seen any issues reported with the Netopia stuff (and I used to use them a long time ago) so, my first guess would be to make sure your Printer has the latest firmware.

If it does, post back and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks Andrew, you missed my 2nd question:

I added it after editing my OP, which you wouldn't have seen via email.
Sorry/Thanks!

So forum rules prevent me from speculating on future products, and HP wouldn't let me post future product schedules even if forum rules allowed it. But as you pointed out, the best indication is probably to look back in time at the product release cycle and then extrapolate forward, understanding that doing this does not guarantee anything. (Note the model in between the one you have and the current model was the C309 series if that helps.) Sorry I can't do any better then that.

Just trying to help.

I'm not suggesting you leak official HP schedules...
It's just that you'd be much more familiar with the pattern of past releases.
And so could more easily "guesstimate" whether or not a successor is likely in 11'.

I realise it's by no means an exact science, & isn't necessarily correct at all.
But if you feel it's "putting your neck on the chopping-block", then I understand.

Thanks again.

Jedlh-

The current line of HP AirPrint-capable printers are fairly new. Some of the previous non-capable models may still be available (such as a 409 instead of the 410).

I predict there will be a new model in time for the holiday shopping season. But there will also be a newer model released in time for the following year. As long as you use the "newer model" criteria, you will never buy a printer!

jedlh,

I know you edited your post so it doesn't contain the question on forum rules, but from that link to the right on every page "Help & Terms of Use":

As for past releases, the Photosmart Premium Fax Wireless e-All-in-One C410a was released in 2010, the Photosmart Premium Fax Wireless All-in-One C409a was released in 2009, and the previous model under the old naming scheme, the Photosmart C7280 All-in-One was release in 2008.

Andrew,

Thanks for the rough idea of the line's naming schema in recent yrs...
I think I'll time my upgrade for towards the end of this or early next, I'm still quite happy with my C7280 for now.

With the acquisition of WebOS in recent times, I have a feeling this yr or next is going to be amongst the biggest period of innovation for HP in it's history.
And printers will be chief amongst it's portfolio to benefit from this golden age 🙂

Thanks again & all the best.

Q: What routers are know to work with AirPrint?
A: While we haven't exhaustively tested every wireless router, in addition to the entire Apple AirPort line, we have tested with the following devices:

- Trapeze WLAN controller
- Linksys WRT54G
- Cisco 1200

I realize this list isn't huge, but hopefully it will help for those looking at what should work. I have also asked the QA team to test any additional routers they have at their disposal.

Just trying to help.

PS Sorry for being slow to reply lately, I severely sprained my right hand & wrist on Saturday so I'm single handed typing at the moment. Fortunately nothing broke.
