AirPrint Information and FAQ

All, I figured I'd start one of my famous FAQ threads here to help head off some of the problems. So with that being said, lets get started.

Q: What is AirPrint?
A: AirPrint enables printing from a supported iOS 4.2 device to supported AirPrint enabled printers. Today several HP models support AirPrint.

Apple AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356

Apple AirPrint Support Page:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/airprint.html

HP AirPrint Information and Printer list:
http://www.hp.com/go/airprint

HP AirPrint Support Page:
http://www.hp.com/sbso/printing/mac/hp-airprint.html

Q: I don't have one of the supported printers, is there any other way for me to get AirPrint to work?
A: Yes, there are several third party AirPrint Sharing Solutions for the Mac (although I am not personally endorsing any of them):

FingerPrint
http://www.collobos.com/

Printopia for Mac
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/

If you have a problem with a specific printer while using one of these applications, please direct the question to vendor that wrote the app.

Q: Does AirPrint work directly with any Printer?
A: No. At this time, only select models from HP work with Airprint.

Q: Can I share a printer from my Mac and print to it?
A: See the above question for the 3rd party products that enable AirPrint Sharing.

Q: Can I connect a USB printer to my AirPort BaseStation (Express, Extreme, TimeCapsule)?
A: This is not supported. See above.

Q: Can I use AirPrint with my older HP printers?
A: This is not supported by HP. See above.

Q: I have one of the supported printers that is supposed to work now, but I'm not seeing it. What's wrong?
A: Make sure you have updated to the latest firmware available. You can check in:

Tools->Web->Automatic Updates->Check for Product Updates.

Note that you may need to enable eWeb Services to see the updates.

Q: I have on of the printers that will be supported in the future (ie one of the Officejets), when will it be supported?
A: While at the moment the latest official answer is December 27th. I hope to be able to update this soon with an earlier date, but it will still be sometime in December.

Q: I have an iPhone 3G or a second gen iPod touch. I have iOS 4.2, but I am not seeing AirPrint, can you help?
A: AirPrint only shows up on iOS devices that support multitasking. While these devices have iOS 4.2 available for them, they do not support multitasking and hence do not support AirPrint.

Q: I still can't figure this out, what am I doing wrong?
A: Hopefully HP will have a support doc posted later today with pictures to help you work through the steps. I'll post a separate link to that document once its ready.

I will build on this list in this thread over time if you have questions that aren't answered here.

And while most of you from the Mac forums know this, I need to make it clear here as well: Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

Just trying to help.

As long as the iOS device and the printer are on the same network you can print to the printer. So yes you can print from a wireless iOS device to a wired printer. Some routers split their wireless clients on to a separate network from the wired clients. This would prevent AirPrint from working. A more common problem is that older routers do not pass multi-cast DNS traffic (Bonjour traffic) between their clients. I believe this is the problem with your PlayMax router.

Andrew;

In an attempt to find a solution to my 8500 A910 (service ID: 21116, Product Number CM755A), scanning problem (more about that later), I discovered this query. Have you found the answer? I currently have FW Version LRP1FN1107AR, Driver version HP Inkjet 3 Driver 2.1. Fresh out of the box, it updated itself automatically. Do I even have the same model as Chris?

EPrint, AirPrint, WiFi and USB all print fine. HPScan3 fails. I can eventually (5 - 10 minutes later, sometimes) get Image Capture or Preview to scan, and have, but HPScan3 fails. I have a sheaf of emails back and forth with HPSupport, to no avail. Their most recent post is that I should consult with Apple, as it seems to remain an OS issue. I am willing to forward any and all (I warned you about the size of the communications, haven't I?) emails between HP and myself.

Ideas?

Pete

rs11gps - I too have the D-Link DIR655 and have upgraded to firmware 2.03NA and have problems. I've tried everything I've found mentioned with this router and with my printer (6500A Plus e-AiO).

I tried turning off multicast stream as discussed here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2815667?answerId=15651872022#15651872022

I've tried turing the router to only 20MHz connections.

I've tried to figure out how to force "G" only connection for that specific device. I can't tell how to fix it. Have you ever been successful with getting AirPrint to work with the DIR655?

I tried on a different network with a Linksys WRT54G and it works right away! My only thought is the "N" speeds aren't happy on the router talking to the printer and to the iPad even though everything is rated b/g/n compliant. I have both G and N devices on the home network with the DIR655. I originally purchased the 8500A due to price being better than the 6500 at the time, but returned it when couldn't get it to work and purchased the 6500A because I had success setting it up multiple times for other networks.

My last attempt will be tonight with the DIR655 by putting it in "G only" mode to see if it will accept the airprint to pass through.

ANDREW - If you're still around and watching this thread can you update us on any router changes that Apple and/or HP know to be an issue. I have spent 4 hours on tech support trying to fix the 8500 and 6500 issues I'm having and at the end of it they blame D-Link, but then D-Link support (useless as it is) says if I can print from a standard computer okay then nothing is blocking the signal through the router.

Does anybody have success with airprint over any TrendNet routers? That might be my next purchase rather than an old style Linksys WRT54G. I want/link the N speeds for my other gear that I need an "N" router and still be able to get AirPrint to work.

Spacetzar-

Your question is tagged onto a very old topic. Starting a new topic will probably get more results.

The iPad normally prints via WiFi. An exception may be where your printer is on the internet, and it allows you to send it print jobs via E-Mail. However, you may not want your printer accessible from the outside world.

Therefore you need a local network to print, which has to be WiFi for the iPad. Connected directly to a WiFi printer set up as an Ad Hoc Network, you would not require a computer to be involved, or even a WiFi router. This connection is independent of the iPad's 3G internet connection.

I bought the HP Laserjet M1217 printer to get a print capability for my iPad2. I installed an airport express off of the router supplied by my cable company - comcast -. In setting up the wifi I require a password to allow users in but now I suspect that my HP printer can not see the network because of this password. My iPad2 and macbook pro can access the wifi no problem but I can not print from either device to the HP laserjet.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I have an HP airprint-capable printer. I have iOS5 on my iPad2 and iPhone4S. I can find the device and print. My problem is that the device only seems to want to print in landscape mode, not portrait. It cuts off pages that should be one page. I flipped the screen to portrait and locked it. Still it prints in landscape. There is not a "setup" in either the general tools or off of the print function that allows me to fix this. Is there a way to get it to print in portrait mode?

Thanks!!

Everything seemed to be working except the docs won't print on a network printer. Even a tcpdump showed that the iOS device was trying its best to print the doc. I just recently discovered that our IPS was overwhelmed and was dropping packets. I guess TCP was taking care of that in case of other network devices but the iPhone's TCP stack was not able to handle this or something and it would drop the connection.

So, with that said, no, it didn't really "work". I may revisit now that the IPSes are being replaced.

Hi Andrew,

I've been reading all the answers you've been supplying for users' HP printer woes. I have similar such problems, and would VERY much appreciate your help/insight.

Here's the setup:

- iPhone4 trying to airprint from email/safari

- HP B210e

- Actiontek, Verizon FIOS Router, Model#: MI424WR

As others have indicated, at one point, AirPrint did work, but it has hasn't worked in fairly long time. I have also tried disabling and re-enabling Web Services from the printer's screen. I've also tried to change the WiFi Protected Setup settings on the printer's screen, to no avail.

I sincerely thank you, you're providing an excellent service and you are an invaluable resource. I appreciate any/all feedback/suggestions.

I know i am a little late to the party here

but now that we have the laserjet cm1415 printers i am trying to enable ipad printing on my corporate network

i am not blocking bonjour, the users are connecting to a cisco 1130ag access point and the 2 laserjets we have are connected to the same subnet via ethernet (because the printers dont support 802.11x auth)

I cannot seem to get any ipad or iphone to reconize the hp printers, they are both at the most current firmware and i can see them from my work station as well as see the ipads.

is the issue that the bonjour broadcast only works in the local collison domain ?

any help or guidance would be great

thanks
