Will Airplay work without AppleTV?

Hello - can you please let me know that now i have downloaded the latest ipad software 4.2 and when I play a movie, the airplay icon does not a appear, this may be a silly question - but do I need to have an Apple TV box first for the feature / logo to appear?

I believe you do need the apple tv for that feature, at least for now. Also, if you have a 3G model you need wifi turned on.

Can also stream to an airport express (audio only)

Denon, Marantz, iHome etc have also announced compatible devices to come Marantz has an AV Reciever that is out now and compatible through firmware upgrade.. happens to be their top of the line model though .. more third party devices are definitely on the way though

I don't know. I have the same problem but not with the iPad. I have an iPhone 4 and I have the newest update. My friend hasn't an Apple Tv and he can. I hasn´t also an Apple Tv and I can´t. Why? Explain? Pleas help me. It's important!

Try http://www.airserverapp.com/ . It runs on your mac and seems to be capable of streaming audio, video and some app content from your iOS device. It doesn't support mirroring but music and videos work fine.
