Dropouts using Airplay on iPad

Hi there.

I'm having music drop out periodically for the odd few seconds when playing from the iPad with Airplay to an Airport Express. Doesn't happen from my iPhone. Restarting doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Got it working!!! For some reason signing out of the iTunes store in 'Settings' made it work. ( Or is one messed up coincidence!?) My apple tv is set up useing my account while the iPad is actually my wife's which is set up through her account. Signed back in through her account and it seems to still be working. Whatever the reason this seems a bit flakey nonetheless! Not sure if is helps anyone but I hope it does.

I am having similar issues with my new Apple TV streaming from iTunes on my iMac. Streaming works fine from my iPhone 4 but randomly drops out for a second or two at a time when playing on my Mac. I think it may be something to do with network load and how iTunes encodes the music stream?

Seems that if I restart my Mac it will work for a while, sounds just like someone pulling the plug out of your headphones for a second then plugging it in again.

Help anyone?

Good luck on trying to figure this issue out. Playing music through Airtunes (and now Airplay) is completely inefficient unless you don't get annoyed by your music dropping out constantly. This is coming from someone who has banged their head against the wall with this since the very first Airport Express. I have owned 2 different models of Airport Express, have lived in 3 different locations, even had an outside configuration in my BBQ area behind my house. I have had some OK days with playing music but never a full session of listening to music without it cutting out, sometimes real fast cut in and out, most of the time very long periods where it just pops back on out of nowhere. I was hoping something was configured differently with "Airplay" and for once in like 7 years I could make this wireless music thing happen. NOPE been testing out the iPad with my airport express.....same deal. It's my life mission to successfully play my itunes wirelessly to speakers.

LOL Simmer down we were just troubleshooting. I am not advocating anyone to leave their network open.

For what is worth I fixed my issue. I added an airport express on the same floor as my ATV2 (and other network devices such as iPad and iPhone). I am using the Express "n" to extend the network of my Extreme that is upstairs. No drops, skips, or issues since I installed it.

I am now streaming music and movies from either my iphone, ipad, or macbook without any issues. Which is great because listening to music with a stutter got annoying rather quickly.

I am.

If one pays attention to the court cases (though admittedly few at this point, but enough to establish a trend), one sees the juries using a disturbing logic involving crimes committed with wireless networks. That logic is simply : if you have ANY security on your wireless network, you did it no matter what 'it' is.

Sample scenario : someone who knows a lot more about wireless security cracks your network security, spoofs your IP and MAC addresses and sends whatever President a nice little love note. The Secret Service has all the evidence necessary to convict YOU, and juries are all-too-willing to go along.

More likely sample scenario : the tech-savvy sexual predator on your block doesn't want to get caught, and compromises your wireless network to access kiddie ****. It appears like your IP and MAC address are doing the downloading. Guess what? Get used to the Graybar hotel.

The odds of you pulling a technologically sophisticated jury capable of seeing that you DIDN'T do it are - for all practical purposes - nil. The only court cases I could find that delivered acquittals ONLY acquitted when there was NO wireless security enabled. To reduce to the absurd, enabled security = guilt almost 100% of the time.

So you can be bulletproof - in your mind - and still end up in jail for something you didn't do. Do try and take comfort in the fact the average person who sits on jury is just too stupid to see the realities and limitations of wireless 'security'.

It's a simple decision : Do you want to stop mythical, mostly non-existent 'hackers' or do you want to create reasonable doubt? Choose wisely.

fpalestini,

So this problem has been with you for 7 years and you don't think that it'll be resolved anytime soon?

I brought an Apple TV last week because I want to stream my iTune music from my iPad and play on my home theater system. I had audio dropouts every 30 seconds or so. Most dropouts last less than a second, so they are more like stutters, but sometimes the dropouts can be longer and even indefinitely.

My ATV is connected with wi-fi. Would it work better if it is connected directly to the router with an ethernet cable? If this is a problem with Airplay, does Apple knows about this and fixing it? I'll have to return my Apple TV if I cannot find a solution. Thanks.

I had the same trouble, but got it resolved. Here's my architecture for reference:

• Toshiba Satellite Laptop with WinXP Pro SP3, Intel Wireless NIC, running iTunes 10.1.0.54
• Airport Express (purchased 12/9/2010) 7.4.2 firmware
• Yamaha RX-V659 amplifier
• No other wireless networks around. I do have the usual cordless telephones, microwave ovens, TV remote controls, etc.

I purchased the Airport Express for the sole purpose of streaming music to my home sound system from iTunes (on the PC). Though the setup of the Airport was straight forward and painless, the music drop-outs commenced immediately, at a rate of about one every ten seconds or so. Sometimes no sound, sometimes “skipping” as the old vinyl records did. I tried all the stuff discussed here. What finally cured the problem (at least for one night of several hours of playing, last night) was when I went to Intel's website and updated the drivers for my Wireless NIC on my PC.
I infer from the longevity of these postings, here, that this long-lived problem was finally addressed by the third-party hardware providers, with-or-without Apple’s help.
…for what it’s worth…
