AirPrint on non supported (shared) printers-HowTo OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574

What you might want to try (I found that on a German Blog some hours ago):

From *System Preferences* remove existing printer(s)

launch AppleScript editor
cut&paste the following 2 lines:

*do shell script "echo '# enable AirPrint*

*image/urf urf (0,UNIRAST<00>)' > /usr/share/cups/mime/airprint.types" with administrator privileges*

run that script and enter your admin pw

This will create text-file @ /usr/share/cups/mime/ that will (should) re-enable AirPrint support again (at least on the current build of OS X 10.6.5 10H574), which can easily be removed.

reboot

add printer(s) again + share them through *System Preferences*

Keep in mind that this patched MAC (OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574) must be up and running in order to use AirPrint!

It works for me, but if it doesn't work for you for whatever reasons: *failure is always an option!*

Thank you! Now iOS 4.2 is what I was hoping for. Can now print from my iPad, iPhone, and iPod. I have a network connected (wired to my router, not USB connected) Brother MFC-8660 multi-function (print, scan, fax) laser printer shared from my MacBook Pro. Running OS X 10.6.5. Not sure what build (or where to find that info), but it's the latest OS as of this posting.

For those who this has not worked for: After rebooting my Mac I had to remove and then re-add my printer before it worked. Simply un-sharing and then re-sharing did not work. But after removing and re-adding the printer to my mac, it now works great. Huge thanks to Kay!

Had to reinstall Scanner driver, and now both are working fine. Not sure if either had anything to do with the other. But ok now.

Kay M,

Does it matter on which Mac? The reason I ask is I have a non AirPrint Samsun laser
printer attached via a USB port to my iMac. I have been able to print using Print Sharing
with my wife's MacBook Pro via our local wireless. We have a new iPad and cannot
find a printer and I wonder if your script will work. The iTunes host for our iPad
is the MacBook Pro.

The MBP must be running 10.6.5 or higher and the computer must be on.

Both the MBP and the iMac are at 10.6.6. Does the script need to be in the MBP or the iMac? The
printer is installed and attached to the iMac. My guess (only a guess) is the script should be
with the Mac that has the printer.

Thank you, thank you Kay Marczock. Your tip worked perfect. I ran the scrip
on the iMac that is hard wired (USB) to our Samsun ML-2240 Laser printer. After
the install I was able to print from the iPad.

Works just fine on OSX 10.6.6, too.
