shrinking quicktime files

In quicktime 10, is there a way to shrink the .mov file size so that I can attach it to an email?

Hi -
Within Quicktime 10, your choices are pretty limited.
Open your file.
Go to the menu File > Save For Web . . .
Choose the option to make the the file for the iPhone (Cellular). It is the choice to make the smallest file.
Save it to where you can find it.
See if that works for you.
Note: Any form of compression reduces the quality of your movie - you will have to live with reduced quality to have a smaller file size.

Hope this helps.

.mov files are pretty much compressed as they are.

.mov QuickTime is just a container. The amount of existing compression depends on what codec and settings they used in the .mov. If it is Apple Animation, for instance, there is much opportunity for compression.

You can put it in iMovie and use the Share options to compress it down.

I don't know of one in Quicktime but you can right click the .mov file and select compress to zip it. That might shrink it a bit.

Chances are this won't do a thing. Since most movies are already compressed and zip only uses lossless RLE, zipping it probably won't save any space. In some cases the file could get larger.

Tried this but you have to place it on a server, which is not an option for me. Is there a program free to download that could convert the file to a smaller size for email?

Save as (choosing a different format) or save for web & picking the one you want afterwards, doesn't require placing the file on a server.

Save as - Pick iPhone format from the dropdown - & It should create an m4v file in the folder you choose. Meg's suggestion is a good one.
