Mute button doesn't even work!

Yeah, that iPhone 4, a complete failure. Apple has only sold what, 10 or 12 of them? Oh, there was a long waiting period for them? Who would have thought it.

Mute button is working fine on my iPad, if I turn it on it stops the system sounds from playing and interrupting when I'm listening to music, watching a TV show or movie, or even reading a book. Just like it is supposed to do.

What is yours doing?

My "new" mute switch also is not working. It shows it being muted on the screen (icon in the middle when I turn mute on), but the sound continues to come out of the speaker.

The new mute switch only mutes sounds that are triggered by the system i.e. notification and alert bleeps, not sounds that are controlled by the user i.e. music and video.

By design the "mute" button does not mute all sounds. It only mutes sounds like notifications and other system sounds (button pushes and key strokes, etc.). Your iPad is functioning correctly.

The orientation lock functionality is still there. There is an orientation lock button on the left of the multitasking bar which is accessed by double-clicking the home button (swipe right to see it).

The mute switch only mutes system sounds and notifications. If you want to mute everything, then use the volume rocker switch.

I found that problem too! It makes the mute button useless.

They should actually allow us to choose in "settings" whether we want it as a mute button or rotation lock.

I personally find the rotation lock much more useful.

Didn't you see any of the hundreds of posts describing the new configuration?

Hi Jim, I just wanted to say thanks very much for your answer to the original 'problem'. I have only bought my I-Pad in the last few days and also thought the 'mute' button was malfunctioning. Your down to earth explanation was just what I needed. Cheers!
