IOS 4.2.1 battery drain

Anyone noticed any battery drain so far on IOS 4.2.1?

Also make sure that you don't have any apps that continues to run in the background (using the multitasking feature of the iPhone). A friend of mine got hit with a nice hefty bill from his provider, because one of his apps kept running in the background under 3G instead of wi-fi over night. He wasn't aware the app didn't actually fully quit, and kept it on overnight. Luckily his provider canceled the extra data charges.

Good Point Eric! double press the square button to bring up active applications. You can delete them all in the usual way, mail etc will re-start itself.

I had nearly all my apps running in the background, it seems that a reboot does not kill them and they are re-started when the OS re-boots. Something a full restore would sort out.

Running tests again now to see if there is an improvement.

Well I'm convinced now... closed all the background running apps, and monitored the battery drain. Much better and back to normal with all the 3G/WIFI/PUSH/Mail/Exchange etc... running as per my tests on the 13th

See graphs:

With Background Apps: http://yfrog.com/h8ckidj

I'd recommend shutting them down and performing your own tests. (Double push Square)

I agree, but I think my particular problem was the sheer amount of apps running in the background not one specific one, ( I deleted and re-added all the recently updated apps about 6 since I first encountered the problem ) I had what looked like about 60 apps running.

I think in my instance it was a accumulative effect. Now I have a clean slate and if the problem occurs again I can perform a programmatic test one app at a time. But if I keep the levels of background apps to a minimum I hope the problem will not return.

Still think this is a bug that Apple need to spend some time looking at, at least allow the feature to not re-start all your background apps after a re-boot or enable a Background Manager to clean up and monitor the background tasks usage.

I managed to bypass the problem!
Even though my wife has the same phone/os/settings, she does not have this problem. I had.... That was so strange, so I have to decide if it was hardware related, or software.

In order to decide, I started using the phone, the same way she was doing. Now, the problem solved...!!! What I did? I just opened the wifi/3g-cellular-data connection, since I have them all to OFF, and let the phone sync its exchange accounts by opening email, contacts and calendar. After that, the phone was ok!!!

I don't know if this will solve everybody's problems, but I think you should try it. It is much better than deleting the accounts, rebooting and re-entering accounts info.

...Here is my update guys - it's been while, but I thought I'd post!

I had all of the horrible battery drain issues as some of you, and no amount of restores, turning off items such as wi-fi or bluetooth or anything else would help...

Someone I know had similar battery updates after updating the OS, and bought some stupid battery manager app. Their battery life improved. I called ********, because the app wouldn't do anything other than what I could do - i.e., charge the phone. There had to be a solution.

So, I drained the iphone down to 0 from 100%, and then plugged it into charge - for at least 6 hours using the wall charger (*not the macbook USB port*).

After this charge, everything was back to the great battery life that I had experienced with the iPhone 4 prior to the OS update - i.e. 2 to 3 days of use.

I have been too afraid to turn on the mobile me find my iphone feature, but perhaps I'll give that a go.

Anyway, I suggest to use the phone from 100 to 0, and then charge for at least 5 or 6 hours (maybe more) and see what happens.

Cheers guys, and good luck!

Hi,

this is my first post 😉
I read almost all of the 30 pages of this topis as I have problems with the battery too.
I bought my Iphone 4 three weeks ago and I'm still struggling with the battery ;-(
Yesterday evening I tried to restore the phone as a new phone from Itunes without restoring a backup.
When the operation was complete I did nothing except turning the wifi off and battery percentage on (I didn't add applications, email account...nothing).
Battery was at 100% and it was 7:15 p.m.
I made a 15 seconds phone call and turned the display on about let's say 10 times but just to check the battery, so let's say for two seconds each time.
I set the phone in airplane mode at 1:00 a.m. without apps in background and the battery was at 75%, this morning at 8:30 a.m. (still in airplane mode) the battery is 35%!!!!

The usage is 13 minutes and the standby 13 hours and 38 minutes

I believe your suggestion will be to send the phone back to Apple but I just wanted to try as the Apple store closest for me is at about 1,5 hours by car and if I bring it back to the provider shop where I bought it they will keep it at least 1/1,5 months... ;-(

Do you have any different suggestion? It's not a "normal" behaviour the one of my battery isn't it?

thanks

Just to keep you updated what helped in my case to solve the problem:

After installing iOS 4.2.1 my battery discharged quicker than it used to. I resetted the phone several times even as a new phone but nothing changed. The strangest thing was that the battery decreased over night in airplane mode by 15%. I could live with the shorter battery life of around 8 to 10 hours, but it was still nagging at me to bring the phone back to what it was before the upgrade.

What finally did the trick for me was to go abroad. The first day of roaming everything was as usual when suddenly the battery started to decrease 10% every half hour with the phone becoming quite hot on the backside. While fiddling with the settings, like resetting the network settings, turning off push and notifications, nothing seemed to help. Even with all applications closed from the multitasking - there was still some unidentified process running that could not be stopped, not even several reboots helped.

As a final resort I switched on data-roaming. The phone downloaded about 300 KB and the drain stopped. I had no app running at that time and there was no email-traffic. Whatever process was still running seemed to have downloaded some data and then the process stopped. Back in my homecountry the phone is behaving a lot better. I am back to the battery-life of before the upgrade to 4.2.1 which is currently a usage of 3 hours and standy of 1.5 days with still 50% Battery left.

Now I wonder what kind of process there was running that could not be helped in my homecountry before. With 3g or with WiFi switched on the process could have downloaded whatever data it needed. Why did it had to take data-roaming abroad to finally satisfy it?!? This is definately something Apple should look at or at least offer some sort of restart that kills ALL the apps and processes running.

All I fear now is that it gets worse again when I next synchronise my phone with iTunes...

I have this problem too, i reset all the settings and turned off push, 3g etc.. and now the phone is fine, the usage time and standby shows everything correctly, but everytime i enable wifi the phone starts to drain battery again, even when i turn wifi off it drains, if i reset everything then its back to normal, i've done this 3 times now so i guess that it is a problem with wifi, atleast in my case... i hope that with 4.3 it will be fixed 🙂

Back to square one. After two days of being back in my homecountry with the iPhone behaving as it shoud, I am now back with the battery drain: last night the battery decreased 15% in airplane mode with no apps running in multitasking. Usage and standy times equal again. So I am back with some sort of process running in the background. dislike!

Anyone an idea?

Jan 26, 2011 6:10 AM in response to monsti88

I had the same problem with my iPhone 3GS 32GB, iOS 4.2.1. Covered by Apple protection care, I got a replacement iPhone; - same problem after restoring it from my backup. Was not happy with the idea of restoring it as a new iPhone.

Finally, I found a solution for me:
switching OFF "find my iPhone" (settings => accounts => MobileMe => find my iPhone = OFF) brought me back to battery times like under iOS 3.1.x.

Statistics at the moment:
37 min. use; 7 h 8 min. standby, 4 min. phone calls, some eMail and traffic (68 KB send, 120 KB loaded). Battery started at 100%, is now at 93% !!

Talked to the apple support, they havn´t heard anything about that problem and especially about a problem with "find my iPhone" so far... 😉

Hope, this will help other too. Please give a feedback in this thread, might be intersting.
