After yesterday charging I thought that problem has dissapeard, but yesterday the phone was about 40% and I have plugged in to my computer - it's something I alwas do! After the phone was full I was using it for about an hour and a half and have left it over night. I have switched off all the app could possibly run in the background, but still leave about 6 pages in safari. This morning the battery was about 30% down and the usage time showed use of about 15 minutes over the night. Someone said that there is a difference if you are charging the phone from computer and directly from the wall socket. Previous time was wall socket. Today I am going to use the phone until the battery dies, I will leave it for two hours, then I will plug in to the computer, restore, set it as a new phone and copy all data, then i will fully charge the phone and leave it charged in the wall socket for about two hours. This is last thing I can do! If it doesn't work I will have to go with new one..:))

I recently updated to iOS4.2.1. But i have been noticing the battery drain since one day before updating. Since then whenever i connect my iphone to the pc for charging, after full charge i have to reset my iphone in order to keep its battery life to normal, if i dont reset, the battery drains from 100% to 10% in 9 hrs with minimal usage.

Has anyone a solution!!

In a way that's good news; it means that 4.2 did not cause the problem, unless the phone "knew" that an update was coming out and prepared for it 😉 I have had times when my battery usage increased dramatically, usually with nothing to connect it to. Once after an update.

There are several solutions, because it is actually several problems that can cause battery drain. Usually it is an app that has tried and failed to send data, but keeps trying. Occasionally it is the network layer itself. So ONE of these tips will probably solve the problem. After each one do a reboot (hard reset) by holding HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears, ignoring the "Slide to power off" message.

0. Run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charge for 4 hours. This recalibrates the battery gauge and is recommended by Apple periodically (monthly)

1. Settings/General/Reset - Reset Network Settings. You will lose WiFi passwords, but nothing else. This takes care of the network layer if it is the problem.

2. Close all Safari pages.

3. If you have ever launched Game Center, Go into Settings/Restrictions and disable multi-player games. This kills a background process that does not show up in the quick-launch bar. You will need to set a passcode on Restrictions. Write it down and don't forget it!

4. If you have any Push email accounts (Exchange, Yahoo, Google or MobileMe) go to Settings/Mail,contacts,calendar. Tap each account name and turn it off (turn off the ACCOUNT, not PUSH). Launch the mail app so it knows the accounts are off, then exit the mail app. After the reboot turn the accounts back on.

5. Go to Settings and turn off Notifications. If this fixes the problem you know you have a misbehaving app. You will have to eliminate them one by one to find the bad one.

6. Open the quick launch bar and kill all apps that might run in background, such as Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Goovle Voice and music streaming apps.

If you have tried each of these and none of them fix the problem Restore the phone as new in iTunes. If the problem goes away connect the phone to iTunes and restore from backup (right click the iPhone entry in the left panel and choose Restore from Backup).

If the problem comes back you have corrupted data in your backup; restore the phone again do not reload the backup. You will have to manually add back your apps and music, and you will lose your app settings, so this is a last resort.

Ughhhhhh I was dreading checking the forums because I was hoping this was just an isolated incident but now I see its a MUCH bigger issue 😟 Directly after updated to 4.2 my battery was at 100% wifi off 3g off woke up just over 6 hours later and it was 33%!?!?!?!

So disappointing! I hope they resolve this!

"They" will not resolve this, as it is not a firmware problem, it is an update problem that has many possible causes. See my message below for how to troubleshoot it ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12661288#12661288)

For an explanation of why it is not the 4.2 release itself see my message above ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12643572#12643572)

"New Setup" is holding steady this morning. My 4 has been off the charger for about 3.5 hours, has had some light use, and is currently at 99%. Yesterday, after 1 hour with ZERO use, it would drop from 100% to mid-80s. I'm crossing my fingers.

And yes, as an earlier poster had said, one should NOT have to do a "new setup" each time they upgrade. If 4.3 comes out in December, I'm going to hold off until the reports from the field come in. Lesson learned.

Well I had no problems with my upgrade. Battery life seems to be better than it was before and I use wifi on and bluetooth on all the time.

Be sure to open Safari and close all pages that are open, bring up multi-tasking, kill all apps, power off phone, do two-button full reset holding until Apple logo displays twice and finally powers off and phone remains off after releasing buttons. Power phone up, fully charge, use phone without charging until battery dies. Plug phone in and fully charge overnight. One thing I always try to do is keep all pages in Safari closed and cleaning out the multi-task bar before plugging in to charge at night. There are a couple of small things to do but this should get you on the right track toward maximizing battery life.

Not sure why you are doing this but those suggestions have nothing to do with battery life. I leave apps open all the time in the multitasking tray and have no problem with battery life. Also leaving the pages open doesn't hurt either because they don't use any processing power when the app is suspended.

What is minimal usage? What does the time say on your settings>general tab? That is what you really need to look at not some general 9 hours with minimal usage.

You have just spoken to me, and I did not have the problem. And most likely 99+% of the users who upgraded did not have it. (I have had the problem at other times with other versions, and I have fixed it.)

1.You are not addressing Apple, you are addressing other users.

2. The problem is not unique to v 4.2.1; it can happen with any version going back to the beginning of the iPhone, and it can happen at a random time unrelated
to an update.

3. Please read the thread you posted to, and you will find out how to fix the problem.

The real issue is that the iPhone needs to reinitialize some stuff sometimes after updating and that can keep your iPhone running, even though it appears to not be running, for a few days at most and that sometimes it might be necessary to reset settings on the iPhone to get it to finish this properly. If you delete or stop using an app and it appears to help, you might want to try reinstalling and/or using the app again to verify it is really causing a problem. It might just be that you deleted it when your iPhone finished updating Spotlight.

Most apps use a limited "smart" form of multitasking that should prevent them draining batteries. The only apps that truely multitask on an iPhone are a few made by Apple and bundled on the iPhone. Safari is a good example of this.

After applying an upgrade, it's a good idea to carry a charger with you for a few days even if you don't normally do this or invest in a cell phone recharing battery pack.

For most users, the decreased run time is temporary and resolves itself.

I don't know how many times I've said this, but I'll say it again. Battery meters on lithium batteries are awful. The iPhone's is as good as I've ever seen one but it's still not all that accurate due to the fact that for everything except measuring how much battery you have left, a consistent voltage is desirable.

I have a 3GS 32GB and recently upgraded to 4.1 from 3.1.3, and have now upgraded to 4.2.1.

The battery life since the 4.x upgrade has been much worse. Yesterday I did a restore of 4.2.1 so as to clean out what is on my iPhone and now, a day later, the battery drain is still there. I can leave nothing running, have no push or any other items that typicaly drain the battery, put the phone to sleep, and after a couple hours it drains at least 10%. A full day of moderate use has now become a half day of moderate use.

Something has changed, and it is not the hardware. It would be nice if the support department would at least listen to a customer and also admit there is an issue.

Does Apple supply some type of resource monitor so that I can look at what is consuming power? Something like a CPU meter, with any other resource usage logging, would be really helpful.
