Nov 24, 2010 1:14 AM in response to oleoloby oleolo,I resolved the issue. Maps is working again. I had to reset the settings as follows:
Reset iPad settings. From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your preferences are reset, but your data and media aren’t deleted.
Fortunately, this does not tamper with installed apps, only with general settings. -

Sep 8, 2016 7:31 PM in response to oleoloby Balzac.nyc,SImply deleting google maps and re-installing it fixed the problem. It wasn't necessary to reset.
Though opening google maps was unsuccessful, when I pressed the home button to see what was open, google maps, with its most recent search, was invariably open. So the problem was an inability to exit that last search. When I tried to enter a new search, it simply shut down.
