iSight and Flash

I have the same problem since the 10.6.5 update. iSight works with Mac applications but It doesn't work with Flash player inside browser. I have checked on dozen websites. It just shows black screen. I have reset/changed Flash global settings and everything but problem is still there.

PS: I have also repaired permissions.

Welcome to Discussions, Sharj

You have done some good troubleshooting on your 10.6.5 system.

Several 10.6.5 users are currently finding problems with Flash based video web sites, perhaps due to timing differences in the various update cycles of the developers.

Therefore, check all third-party items like Flip4Mac, Safari "Extensions", web-based chat items, social web site "toolbars", etc., to be sure you are using the latest versions compatible with your system. Uninstall any with known issues pending their next update.

If you are still having iSight problems but ONLY on Flash-based web sites, here are some things you can try. Depending on system configuration and installed third-party items, various users have reported different methods of restoring Flash video website functionality. Which might work for you seems to be a matter of what you have added to your system, so keep trying any relevant to your system until you find the one that might work for you.

(1) For those who have installed Google plugins, user OysterOyster reports that uninstalling them restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.

If Google is your problem, the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app should be in your hard drive's Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. ( not your *Home > Library* folder)

Several users confirm that using the Google uninstaller works to restore Flash video functions.

Some other users, including those who do not use the Google plugins, have found other remedies.

(2) User joew13 reports that installing the 64-bit Flash plug-in beta for Mac OS X (DMG, 8.7 MB) fixed Flash sites for him.

This link allows download of the 64-bit plugin beta from an official Adobe page:

  http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

or, to download the beta directly, click this link--> http://tinyurl.com/2frejs4

Several other users have confirmed success after the beta update.

(3) User imagerle downgraded Flash to version 10,0,45,2 to restore Flash video.

If this older version is not available on a backup or an old install disk, it can be downloaded from Adobe's Archived Flash Players page:

  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html

(4) User sirjoe82 and others have reported that uninstalling Flip4Mac restored their Flash video website functions.

In the interest of helping others I'll confirm that I was able to get the camera to work in the browser plugin by un-installing gchat's video features. I then re-installed them and the problem returned (verifying that it was, indeed, the culprit). Then I followed the tinylink to get the 64 bit flash player and that solved the problem. Specifically, the list of available cameras now NO LONGER includes the "isight" but just says "USB Video Class Video" which is the correct choice. Everything now works as expected.

Thanks for letting us know what worked for you, and for the
"USB Video Class Video" specifics for built-in iSight, too!

BTW: External (Firewire) iSight users will need to select "IIDC Firewire Video."

Cheers,

Hi,

Just want to share what worked for me since it took me over 3 hours to figure this out. So this may help those who are also frustrated with this issue.

First I did #1 (uninstalling Google Voice) but didn't work. Then I did #4 (uninstall Flip4Mac), still didn't work. Then I went to try and to do #2, but the link doesn't list any 64-bit downloads, it only lists 32-bit. Either way, I tried that, still didn't work. Then lastly, it took me a while to do #3. I tried installing the 10,0,45,2 but it wouldn't let me because you have to uninstall your current flash version first. Download the uninstaller at the bottom of the page on the link for solution option #2. After doing that, I installed the 10,0,45,2 version and it worked! (yay) The link on solution option #3 doesn't specifically go to this file download, you have to download the entire Adobe 10 (which is about 155mb), then as EZ Jim mentioned, you have to install the specific version 10,0,45,2.

So, I then (bravely) reinstalled Google Voice and learned that my iSight still works! Then I reinstalled Flip4Mac, then also learned that it still works as well.

Based on this, my (personal) conclusion is that the problem is with Flash. Hope their next update will solve the issue.

Thanks EZ Jim for providing all these options! #3 worked for me.

You're most welcome.

You have done a clever analysis of the problem in your system. Others may have different software installed and may find success with other options.

However, you have identified *and corrected* the problem in your system. Well done!

Thanks for sharing what worked for you.

You do not post which MBP:  http://support.apple.com/specs/#macbookpro

Check to see if yours is one that can use 64-bit (Adobe currently calls them "square") Flash plugins:

  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696

The 64-bit download at my h ttp://tinyurl.com/2frejs4 link has been replaced by a later (30 Nov) version at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html

If your MBP can use 64-bit apps, you can try both versions linked in my earlier post.  Restart your Mac and comply with Adobe's admonition to uninstall previous versions of Flash Player before installing either version.

However, if your MBP's processor is 32-bit, stay with the 32-bit version downloadable from

  http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

Restart your Mac and comply with Adobe's admonition to uninstall previous versions of Flash Player before installing any version, including this one, that instructs you to do so.

If you cannot find any version of Flash that works, you may have conflicts with other software. We will watch for your status update and offer other suggestions based on the details in your reply.

Just wanted to thank you for this post. I didn't think I'd installed Google Chat, so I tried the 64 bit Flash first (which is now not 10.2, it's a version called 'Square' by the way: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html).

That didn't work, but then I found I had Google Chat installed and removing that worked perfectly. Could have been a combination of the two of course, but I think it was the Google Chat issue. I will experiment with adding it back in later (see if there's updated versions, etc).

Anyhow, your help much appreciated - thanks.

Solved! For me anyway! Let me be perfectly clear as I had to combine a lot of other peoples ideas before I got this solved. This is for MAC. The problem lies with the Chrome browser having its own flash. FIRST: type "about:plugins" (no quotes) into Chrome's address. There you will find a list of installed plugins. Disable flash. NEXT: uninstall any flash players that are installed in your computer with this file from adobe: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/uninstallflash_playerosx.dmg
Run that to uninstall flash (quit all browsers first). THEN: get this flash instead from Adobe labs http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10_square.html Choose 32 bit or 64 bit as appropriate for your Mac (if you have an Intel Core duo, get the 64 bit) You may have to google to find out which you need for older machines. Download the right dmg, quit all browsers again and install it. Restart Chrome and try a site that requires your isight in flash. This works perfectly for me. I still have the option to use the google voice and camera plugin in google chat and my isight works. Try this and let me know if this works for you. And feel free to thank me! 🙂 David

You're most welcome.

Thanks for letting us know what worked for you and for the link to the pre-release (beta) versions.

As shown by the version "Date" in the upper corner of the linked page, the beta versions are changed frequently. The 64-bit been updated at least twice since I posted the link to which you replied, and, as of the date of this post, the 32-bit version from the link you provide was last updated on 11 January.

To assure the most current version available, *other readers should consider the dates on all posts regarding Flash updates*. The latest version should provide best security and fewest stability problems.

Thanks again for your post, voidstring, and congratulations on your success!
