Q: is XSAN required for iTunes U server clustering?

Hi, hopefully I can find someone here with similar experience to answer this.

We are planning for iTunes U using 2 Xserve(s) in active/active mode, we are wondering if XSAN software is absolutely required to allow both servers access files save on a shared network space in our SAN array? Is RSYNC good enough to handle this type of task?

Thanks,

If you want true failover with Apple Xserves then XSAN will let you do this.

Without a proper cluster-filesystem (e.g. Xsan) you run the risk of corrupting data if both servers/clients are accessing same files at the same time.

Rsync is nice, I use it all the time, but not for real-time synchronization between hosts. Rsync is a great backup tool to keep two volumes in sync.
