Photos lost? in upgrade to 4.2

After upgrading to iOS 4.2 on my iPad I have lost most (but not all) of the pictures in the Photos app. At least I can't view them on the iPad or download them to my computer, although it still says 13.7GB of my iPad's memory are attributed to Photos.

How can I get access to those images, or at least save them to my computer?

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to the iOS 4.2 and about 2,000 photos were wiped. Such a disappointment. Any ideas how to get them back? It looks as though they may be taking up the space on my phone but there is no way to access them (even through iPhoto or Image Capture). The fix explained here also does not work for me (as I had no music files on the phone) http://techcrunch.com/2010/11/22/ios-42-bug/
