preview quits unexpectedly

Hi,
I hope someone here will be able to help me with this problem. For about 2 weeks, the application Preview has quit unexpectedly every time I try to open an image or pdf file. I have installed all system updates and repaired the disk permissions. I also tried creating a new user account and the application quits unexpectedly even when logged in as the new user. I'm going to paste the error message in the next post.

Are you sure you're using the right version of Preview?

The crash log shows that Preview is version 2.1.0, which I would guess is from before OS X 10.3.9. The version I have on my 10.3.9 partition is Preview 2.1.1.

The version of Preview I have on my Tiger partition is version 3.0.3.

Interestingly, I am able to get Preview 2.1.1 to launch successfully in Tiger. The error you're getting shows that Preview is crashing quite early in its launch, while trying to create the Main menu. Could be due to missing resources or something else that's causing it to raise an exception. This could be the result of an incompatibility between the version of the application and the frameworks it's intended to run on.

Do you have any other partitions with older versions of Preview around, or perhaps some old "Previous Systems" folders lying around?

Thanks for this info. I checked and my preview is version 2.1.0. I don't know why this is, since assumedly I had Preview version 3 when I updated to Tiger, several months before the problem appeared. I had the version of Preview that could open PDFs in the Safari browser window. Is it possible that the application reverted to the old version somehow??

Yes,
Apple discussions has a new system in place now, so those links don't work anymore.

Dr.Smokes Unexpectedly Quiting link covers it for most.
First, try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in his Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
If, after all his tips, you still have problems, post back and I'll try to get the new links for those tips.
