I used iDVD to make a beautiful compilation of slideshows initially created on iPhoto and imported to iDVD. I have iLife '09. Whenever I try to burn to DVD, I get an error message "Error during rendering/encoding." I've been able to burn another similarly made DVD using the same Memorex DVD-R. Can someone suggest a solution? Thank you.
That would be my first guess. Memorex DVDs don't have a good track record here.
Try making your 'burn' to a disk image file (an option under FILE in iDVD). If this works, you can use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the Disk Image .img fie to writable media.

When you look at your iDVD project in the Map View (the 'one box over two boxes' icon will put you in the Map View), do you see any small yellow caution signs?
I don't think the problem is the Memorex disks as the error is at the encoding stage before you actually start to burn the disc.
Do you have background audio on the first menu? If not this is probably what is causing the problem (unbelievable as it sounds). It seems there is a bug in iDVD that mutes the sound on the first menu which causes an encode error.
If you search the forums you will find a number of possible solutions, this is one, which, although didn't work for me, worked for many other people:
1. Open the menu where you are having audio problems
2. Click on the drop zone icon to open the drop zones
3. Move the music (the iTunes music notes) that you've placed here out of the menu box
4. By getting the music icon out of the way, you will reveal a tiny black sound/audio icon
5. If you strain your eyes and look real close you will see that there are no sound waves coming out of the sound icon
6. Click on the icon and tiny black sound waves will appear
7. You have now "unmuted" your menu
8. Drop your music selection back into the menu drop zone
9. You now have sound!
I am researching ways to fix a rendering/encoding issue and I found this. My main menu will play no sound and thus seems to be muted. I have removed the music and the black music icon is left in the box. I click on the icon and nothing happens. I am guessing that is the icon I am supposed to click. Am I missing something? Any other ideas on how to get music to play in the main menu as I think it may be causing the rendering/encoding problem that is keeping me from finishing this project? Greatly appreciate any help.
Thank you, I was going mad with the error menu encoding message and the switching on the audio worked! This is a really stupid bug and Apple should get it fixed. We don't always want audio in a menu.
