When there are photos and/or videos in the Camera Roll, the iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected and the photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera, which is not handled by iTunes.
Did you used to be able to see your phone in iTunes? I was having this trouble yesterday and even upgraded to iTunes 10 but still could not see my phone in itunes even though windows recognized it. I'm away from work now and was trying to sync my phone to get some new music on it; started my laptop, logged into my machine as I usually do, but I'm not connected with my work severs (we share library's at work). The phone did not show up in iTunes. Was about to start going through and uninstalling everything but then I remembered that I always login in a workgroup domain and usually am at work when I'm syncing my phone. As a last try before doing too much fiddling with my installs, I connected with work via my VPN connection, and restarted iTunes; phone now shows up again. Must be something to do with seeing my work network that affects my phone. The phone is not work related and not managed by our IT department.
I too had same issue and since I read your post I too then VPN'd into my network and phone then appears in ITUNES that makes no since at all as my phone isn't managed by IT department either. I did do the reinstall and was just about ready to throw the phone out as I was getting very frustrated with it.
Thanks for posting.
