sync ipad to upgrade iOS?

I need to sync my iPad with an iMac so as to update the OS to 4.2...iPad not synced with any pc at present...bit concerned about losing the contents on the iPad...would appreciate guidance on how to do this..

When you connect the iPad to the computer/iTunes, a backup of all the content on the iPad will be made on the computer. Just follow the directions and you will be ok and will not lose anything.
