Now that the iPad has os 4.2x, when is iMovie for the iPad coming out?

It would be very useful for me.

Mac Pro- 2x2.26 Quad-Core, Mac OS X (10.6.3), 6 gig RAM- 30" monitor

you know just as much as we do... you're talking to users here, not apple. I personally would like to see iPhoto, GarageBand, iMovie, and iWeb on the iPad. who knows if we ever will, but we did get iWork, so here's hoping!

    It won't be.
The iPhone 4 has twice the memory of the ipad.
The ipad can't handle it, same reason none of the other iPhones have it.

I was thinking about this myself. However, I do not think we will see it for a while. Let me explain why.

The iPad lacks a camera of any type. The only way to transfer videos to the iPad is through iTunes. If you are going to that extreme, why not simply edit the videos on your PC instead of using iMovie on the iPad?

Now, speculation aside, if the iPad gets a camera in the future, I suspect it will also get iMovie in pretty short order. This could theoretically mean that iMovie would come to the iPad as soon as say April or May 2011. Of course that is just a theory.

I've imported movies from my helmet cam directly into the iPad using the camera connection kit.
It would be really handy to be able to do some editing on those.

Yes, I use iMove 6 (don't like the newer ones) or Final Cut or Premier to edit on the computer.
I'm just looking for something for quick editing when on a trip etc.

I know there are some third party ones out there- but was hoping Apple would do it right.

I agree with you that I look for an Apple solution to this. However, someone else pointed out something I had forgotten. The amount of RAM the iPad has is less then what the iPhone 4 has, by half, and this also might be why they are not making iMovie a universal app for both iPad and iPhone.

There is always the hope that we shall see this in the future, but only the oracles of Cupertino know for sure.

iMovie is supported by the 4G iPod Touch which has the same processor and memory as the iPad. Therefore, it should be able to run at least at the same resolution of the iPhone 4/iPod 4G, which is a little less than the resolution of the iPad.
    iPad - 1024-by-768-pixel resolution
    iPod 4G - 960-by-640-pixel resolution

Looks like iMovie is finally on iPad.
But from what I hear, only iPad2...

That's true. Most likely due to the increased memory, faster CPU and built-in camera.

    Released now- but only iPad2
