I am having the same problem. The trash can for delete is now an icon that looks like a box. The box is for archiving. Not sure where mailngoes that is archived. Now the only way to delete email is to put it in the trash folder and delete from there. This is a pain. Can I get the trash can back for deleting email?
I'm confused. Others have posted the same question but my icons hav not changed. I still have the trash can and the second button is reply/forward just as it always was. Is your email account POP or IMAP?
I found the answer in another thread. If you have the archive box and not the trash can for deletion, you have to change the mail settings. I use gmail...I went into mail setting on the iPad and the into the specific gmail setting. There I turned of the archive button and the trash can replaced the archive box.
We couldn't figure out what the new button replacing the trash can was for either, so I downloaded the supposedly updated manual. The instructions for deleting mail said just click on the trash can or swipe across the list entry, neither of which now work without some completely unobvious intervention.....
Glad to be able to get it clarified here, though disappointed that the documentation doesn't include info on this change.
What you're talking about here is in fact fully covered in several other threads and does seem to apply only to Gmail accounts. It has everything to do with Gmail, very little to do with anything else. To recap: if you want the trash can, go into gmail's settings and turn Archive off. If you want the archive option, leave it on and delete messages from the mailbox list.
