Getting .MP4 movies onto iPad

I want to import .MP4 movies onto my iPad.

I dont seem to be able to import them directly from the SD card using the Apple adaptor. they appear to be importing but then don't appear on the iPad.

I can import them into Quicktime on my computer, and the into my iPad as .m4v via iTunes.
But I am going on holidays soon and will not have my computer.

Is there some way I can import .MP4 movies from SD to my iPad?

I have the same problem now that I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1. MP4s that played fine before the upgrade aren't even recognized on the SD card now. I bought the 32 GB version (instead of 64 GB) as my second iPad because I was able to carry additional videos on SD cards. I have yet to see definitive answer to this in the Apple documentation for the new O/S. I don't understand why it's acceptable to go backwards in critical features on this new release.

The only suggestion is to have a list. Theoretically, the photo app should see them in the same numerical order that they are in on the card. So have a little list of what's on the card.

Another possibility, which is a small chunk of change, is to look into one of the newer wifi portable harddrives that should allow you to stream video from them. (they are their own hotspot). Obviously I haven' tplayed with one, i think few have since they are new, but they could be a possibility to carry movies beyond the iPad's internal capacity, but maybe still have their regular names instead of having to guess.
