Allergy to MacBook Pro body and/or keyboard?

Hello,

I possibly developed an allergic reaction on my fingertips to the material used in my MacBook Pro. Do you know whether there is any Chrome or Zinc used in the aluminum alloy of the body and track pad or in the keyboard?

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

The trackpad is glass, so I don't think you're encountering anything allergenic there. The case is anodized aluminum: aluminum electrocoated with aluminum oxide, which is extremely hard (it's the abrasive material used on most sandpaper). No chromium or zinc there, at least not on the outside surface. If the aluminum underneath the surface is an alloy, it could have zinc or chromium in it, and perhaps you've worn through the coating along the front edges of the wrist rests — but in that case I'd expect any allergic reaction to show up on your wrists or the heels of your hands, rather than on your fingertips. The keycaps are plastic, and I wouldn't expect them to contain any metals at all.

Here's one, and there are others as well:

I suspect, though, that your chances of continuing to have a problem are pretty good unless you cover the top front edge of the palmrest as well as its flat surface. That edge is the part of the machine's case where the metal under the anodized coating is most likely to contact your skin, because it's the first place where the anodizing is apt to wear away. And if you really do have an acute allergy to the MBP's case metal, you'll probably have to apply a plastic skin over the entire case to avoid being exposed to it in the course of normal handling. The MBP may not be the right computer for you. Consider a plastic MacBook instead.
