WiFi Issues With MacBook Air

I am about two weeks in to my new Macbook Air and love it except for the wifi. I have had five or six other Mac laptops in the past five years including the original air. I can confirm that there are some wifi issues with the Macbook Air. Based on the messages posted here and my experience here is where I am. I think if it is a "N" network it seems to work fine. I have never had an issue with my Airport Extreme at my house or my Dad's Linksys at his house which is also an N. This also I think resolves the "is it an ISP" issue, since they are distinctly different ISP's and these both work perfectly.

My problems are on non-N's it seems. I travel a lot so I hit a lot of guest networks which are almost always "g". These networks I can generally find and attach to them but not get a consistent internet connection. With these networks I have found that turning the airport on/off and refreshing the IP address does not work. Again I can connect to the browser, in most cases get what appears to be a valid IP but not gain any internet access. I have found that a power down and reboot AFTER attaching to the network (but not getting the internet connection) will then give me a steady and consistent connection.

I need to do some more testing and I guess traveling to pin down some of these things but I wanted to share what I have found thus far, but I definitely think there is a problem with the wifi on the new MacBook Air's.

Thanks,

Macbook Pro and iMac 27" and iPad and iPhone and MacBook Air 2010, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

@edmunddd:

Thank you for the reply, for sharing your experience, and for your suggestions.

However, as I mentioned in my post (last of the third paragraph), I have tried (exhaustively) these sort of basic wireless troubleshooting steps:

"Basic troubleshooting steps, such as changing channels, repositioning the routers (all of which shouldn't need to be done given that any other wireless device seems to work just fine and have so for a long while), etc. yield no improvements."

And, also mentioned in my post, my internal wireless access points work incredibly well with all other devices that have ever connected to the network - even when placed next to the malfunctioning MBA connected to the same access points, same channel, and even with almost exactly the same SNR ( ~ +/- 2dB). This is not an issue with congested airspace/interference, or attenuation. The MBA is the exception to the rule in all cases.

Google for "MBA 2011 wifi problems" - you will quickly see that there is a widespread problem that Apple needs to address. The more interesting point is that this seems to be an issue beyond just the MBA, and is one that plagues Lion adopters in general. I have read countless wifi issues with those who have owned MBPs that originally shipped with Snow Leopard, and once upgraded to Lion, started experiencing similar wifi issues as those reported for the 2011 MBA.

Again, I do like this MBA in general. Apple makes some of the finest hardware in the world. But they do have a real issue here that needs addressed.

@gpowers01 has the right of it. This problem has been ongoing fo MBA owners of 2011 hardware and running Lion since this combo appeared on the market. All these clever solutions of swapping out routers, creating new profiles, changing channels on the network, etc. do not work long-term because the problem is obvioulsy an OS-level bug that has some relationship to the artchitecture of this machine - as well as others, based on reports, but particularly egregious on the MBA.

While well intended, these solutions will not resolve the MBA networking problem. They are helpful in that they are documents of yet another user experiencing the issues, but insofar as suggesting them as fixes, they don't work. It's helpful to read back through these threads to see that they have all been suggested multple times.

Add me to the list. I have a month-old 2011 11-inch i7 MBA. Most of my problems have to do with inability to connect to most networks after waking up from sleep, when the following happens:

1. Wake up from sleep.

2. "None of your preferred networks are available" message, when in fact they are available. Asks me to choose from list of networks, including my preferred network.

3. Click on my preferred network which has full signal, and after a few seconds get "a connection timeout has occured".

4. Turn wifi off/back on again.

5. Wifi now DOES connect to preferred network after a great number of seconds.

Turning wifi off/back on almost always fixes the issue temporarily, but once I put my computer to sleep I know I'm back to square one. Turning bluetooth off seems to help, though I use a wireless keyboard and mouse fairly often, so this is NOT an acceptable long-term fix for me. Help, Apple!

I used to love Apple products but I am not so in love anymore! I purchased my 2011 Mac book air for graduate school but I can't connect to the Internet at school! Everyday I sit beside someone with a PC connected to the wifi, but I can't get on. The diagnostic says i'm connected but whenever I try brining up a webpage I get an error message that says the connection has timed out. But at the same time I get this message on my computer, i'm connected to the school's wifi and able to get online with my iPhone 4. So it's definitely an issue with the MBA.

I've tried for 2 weeks now and the help desk at the college can't figure it out either. I am so frustrated right now. I spent $1200 on a computer that I can't even use 1/2 the time! (it does connect with no problems to my wifi at home). Why is it that all the PCs around me Here at the school are working just fine but my much more expensive MBA isn't? Wish I had known about the issue beforehand. I would have purchased an HP for 1/2 the price!

A good workaround for people here might be to buy a cheap wireless N usb dongle that works with Lion.

(as a usb-ethernet adapter solutoin is not for wifi, of course!)

I can recommend the Edimax EW-7811UN, which you can read about on the Newegg site and the user reviews there. Many report this works with Lion, and it does for me.

(theres a diff model too which I think works also).

Buy it, get the drivers for 10.6, as these work on Lion. Install them, restart, disable builtin wifi,

and plug in the edimax to a usb port.

A cheap practical solution until Apple releases an update to Os X to fix this imho.

I can confirm that switching channel on the router helps. It doesn't make the problem go away, the MBA just doesn't disconnect as often.

I used iStumbler (http://www.istumbler.net/) to determine which channels were being used in my area, and then I selected an unused channel in the wireless router configuration. The MBA should be able to reconnect to the router automatically if all you change is the channel.

How you change the channel on your router is a whole other story ;-)

PS: As another poster said, Apple has answered his bugreport and confirmed that the problem exists, so I'd expect a solution from them in a forthcoming OS update.

I can't beleive that after years of waiting when I finally switch to Apple with a MBA 13 i7 there is a fundamental bug that makes the machine unusable! It is 1 month old and running 10.7.2 OS and I can only use the internet when I am within 1 meter of my home router.

It is appalling that all my other devices work fine on my 10MB fiber connection, but the MBA is dead in the water. I have both the sleep problem (need to turn WiFi on and off for it to reconnect) and as soon as I move more than 1 meter away the connection is so intermittent as to be unusable.

The fact that Apple is ignoring this and there hasn't been more of an uproar in the press is astounding to me!

this week I went to the Apple Store in Sydney. I explained the problem and they took the computer to replace the airport card. Back home, and the problem is still there. Do you know whether I can swap the MBA with a MBP? The MBA is about 4 months old, 4 months of wifi torture, and I can't take no more. thanks,

Mario

p.s. or any hint on when 10.7.3 will be out???
