WiFi Issues With MacBook Air

I am about two weeks in to my new Macbook Air and love it except for the wifi. I have had five or six other Mac laptops in the past five years including the original air. I can confirm that there are some wifi issues with the Macbook Air. Based on the messages posted here and my experience here is where I am. I think if it is a "N" network it seems to work fine. I have never had an issue with my Airport Extreme at my house or my Dad's Linksys at his house which is also an N. This also I think resolves the "is it an ISP" issue, since they are distinctly different ISP's and these both work perfectly.

My problems are on non-N's it seems. I travel a lot so I hit a lot of guest networks which are almost always "g". These networks I can generally find and attach to them but not get a consistent internet connection. With these networks I have found that turning the airport on/off and refreshing the IP address does not work. Again I can connect to the browser, in most cases get what appears to be a valid IP but not gain any internet access. I have found that a power down and reboot AFTER attaching to the network (but not getting the internet connection) will then give me a steady and consistent connection.

I need to do some more testing and I guess traveling to pin down some of these things but I wanted to share what I have found thus far, but I definitely think there is a problem with the wifi on the new MacBook Air's.

Thanks,

Same problem here with a macbook air 11" (Mac OSX 10.6.8, wifi router is a freebox v6, 802.11n). I have tried all solutions/advices posted here and elsewhere, but the wifi connection is alway random. My other macbook pro and other machines are all ok with wifi. It is a real pity that the macbook air come only with a wifi connection that is randomly working!

Talk of modifying router settings is all well and good, but I'm sitting in a hotel with a perfectly good Linksys 802.11g router, nowhere near an Apple store, typing this message into my 3 month-old Dell laptop because my new 13 inch MBA won't connect to the wi-fi. Bottom line is simple, if a wi-fi adapter says it's 802.11g compatible, it should connect to any 802.11g standards-compliant router. I can't do anything about the hotel's router, but it's pretty easy to say that my new MBA, while elegant in many ways, simply isn't cut out for work in the real world. I didn't buy it to be a toy; I bought it to be productive on the road. This thread should be about fixing the problem with the MBA, not asking network admins to fix a network that is working fine for the other 99% of the computers in the world. There's most definitely a problem. NOT SORTED!

Significant WiFi issues on my new MacBook Air. I just received my new 2011 13" Air, fully loaded with 1.8 i7 and 256GB. I love this computer but was wondering why my Internet was so painfully slow. Then I arrived at work in the morning where we have a T1 line and it's the same! How is this possible? According to SpeedTest.net I'm getting 20Mbs both download and upload but you would never know it from my MacBook. To make matters worse the computer just hangs after you enter a URL and takes 30 seconds before it actually loads the page. My old computer on the same network is working just as fast as ever. What gives here? Is this a problem common to All MacBook Airs or is it something that can be resolved???????

This is driving me insane

Like many other my wifi keeps dropping out even when I am within 1 metro of the router. My wife uses the Macbook Air and we purchased it for its ease of use for her in particular . I have tried everything to fix this, been to the store, checked out all the forums, spoken to Lingsys and my ISP provider.

Apple blame Linksys, Linksys blame Apple. All I know if I use my four year old Dell netbook I have perfecr WIFI. Also the signal strength on the MBA is very weak and the range is a joke. This happens no matter whose WIFI I am using.

I bought this paper weight so my wife did not have to fiddle with settings etc. I am completely disappointed with this worthless piece of junk and shall be seeking a full refund

If you quit all your software, shut down your machine then restart by holding down the apple key plus p & r keys and let the MBA do 2 start up chimes and then let the keys go this will clear pram memory. Go into your router settings and change wireless settings from auto to 802.11n Go into system preferences and manuallt set up your dns settings etc and hopefully this will get it back to speed. Did this with my wifes MBA and for the last few weeks it has been flying ever since. Hope this helps, dont give up even tho it is frustrating it will be worth it

Thanks Robbie. I tried your suggestions and it did improve but when I shut down and restarted same problem. I took the MBA to a freinds place and tried his wireles, same problem, tried a wifi hotspot in the city, same problem. Whilst I was there a customer told me he had a MBA and his wifi was the same. I am no expert but there does seem to be a major issue here. The Apple store suggested buying an Airport Express but could not guarantee any improvement. So I suggested inserting the MBA in the Store Manager to see how it connected with him.

Hi there I do realise how "Pd" off you must be. Apple support tried hard for me but failed. This was going back to old system 8 & 9 basics really. Clear the preferences for your router in user file and restart to make it refind wi fi. I am in middle of scottish countryside and MBA is running my max speed which is 7mbs. Can you use ur other mac to connect then set sharing prfeferences to share internet connection. Then set MBA to connect to ur mac. If that works which it should then its router/mba wifi problem. If it does not then its mba wifi problem. Best of luck
