Q: WiFi Issues With MacBook Air

I am about two weeks in to my new Macbook Air and love it except for the wifi. I have had five or six other Mac laptops in the past five years including the original air. I can confirm that there are some wifi issues with the Macbook Air. Based on the messages posted here and my experience here is where I am. I think if it is a "N" network it seems to work fine. I have never had an issue with my Airport Extreme at my house or my Dad's Linksys at his house which is also an N. This also I think resolves the "is it an ISP" issue, since they are distinctly different ISP's and these both work perfectly.

My problems are on non-N's it seems. I travel a lot so I hit a lot of guest networks which are almost always "g". These networks I can generally find and attach to them but not get a consistent internet connection. With these networks I have found that turning the airport on/off and refreshing the IP address does not work. Again I can connect to the browser, in most cases get what appears to be a valid IP but not gain any internet access. I have found that a power down and reboot AFTER attaching to the network (but not getting the internet connection) will then give me a steady and consistent connection.

I need to do some more testing and I guess traveling to pin down some of these things but I wanted to share what I have found thus far, but I definitely think there is a problem with the wifi on the new MacBook Air's.

Thanks,

Thanks for your tip. That seems to have solved my issue.

My Air was up and down all over the place. My Ipad and sons MBP, no issues.

BTW, it didnt start till I swithched ISP's

Went from ATT Uverse to Time Warner. I ran Speedtest as recommended by Uverse for 3 days side by side dozens and dozens of head to head.

    Time Warner = 16 - 18 Mbps average

    Uverse = 1 - 5 Mbps with a couple around 7.

Amaziing speed difference when side by side

This also worked for me!  Removedd from saved network and selected again the worked fine.

Is Apple acknwolodging and addressing this issue?  Frustraing  connecting and staying connected when traveling.    I pend hours dealing with this.

I have had WiFi connection problemwith my MBA too.

    Solution (which worked for me):

Change the AUTO channel setting on your ROUTER to "11" (or some fixed number).

The other solutions that worked in the past on the same MBA were to change the protocol setting to "802.11g" (neither the auto/mixed or "n" worked very well, I think). But, the best solution is the auto-channel to fixed-channel.

    Hope the above helps.

PS> I found the Apple technicians to be quite clueless -- very surprising and disappointing. The "senior advisor" was reasonably knowledgeable, but was unaware of the above solutions (I figured out by comparing the settings to two routers -- one which mba was connecting to, and one which it wasn't).

802.11g channels overlap. There are 3 channels seperated enough to not overlap: 1,6, and 11.  Most routers come set to channel 6.  That is why you seem to have solved the problem by going to Channel 11.  However, if all your neighbors are using 11, you would have the same problem.  The best solution is to find some sort of utility (e.g. Kismac) that tells you what channels your neighbors are using.

If you are using an Airport, you are better off using 802.11n.  However if any device on an n channel does not support n, it will fall beck to g.  So you are back to the same problem.

The newer Airport (and some Linksys Routers) supports both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands.  Set the 5Ghz up on 802.11n. Set the 2.4GHZ up as 802.11b/g.  IMHO: This is the best solution.

My issue was that after pairing the magic mouse to the macbook air, I wasn't able to auto connect to my prefered networks.

With bluetooth off, the MBA connects flawlessly.

After several attempts I solved it (at least after some attempts and a few restarts) by doing the following:

    1. Go to System Preferences > Network.
    2. Click the Bluetooth PAN
    3. Click the cog button on the bottom left.
    4. Make service Inactive.
    5. Apply.

I would do the same if I had a bluetooth DUN setting in the preferences.

With these bluetooth services inactive, I still have the magic mouse functionality and the wi-fi connects without any pains.

    Hope this helps!

I knew it was something with Bluetooth. But thanks for nailing it down. Cause that worked!

    Hi,

I am having similar issues - only had mac air for 2 weeks and having wifi connect issue....

I have 2 prefered networks setup & these work fine for iphone other laptops & devices....

However, about 4-5 times out of 10 waking mac air from sleep - the join network box appears with message, showing both by prefered netorks with max bars - I click connect & all is fine until later it will fail to auto connect from sleep & I have to click join again

(All my credentials are retained it sees the networks but does not auto connect to preferred networks on waking from sleep).

    This is frustrating.

I have removed BT PAN plus updated DNS

If any other advice - then I would welcome it & will report back if this solved my problem,

    Thanks,

    t

    Hi,

I am a new Apple user and just bought a MBA 13" last week. I am running Mac OS X Version 10.7.3. After experiencing slow internet, mostly noticable when trying to view any type of streaming video, I went looking on the around on the internet to see if I was the only one. Of course I wasn't, and it seems this issue is not new at all. I can't believe Apple has not provided a solution yet. Nothing I have tried from the message boards has worked at all and I am pretty frustrated.

My issue is only slow performance. I do not loose connections randomly as some on this thread have experienced. The wi-fi connection is always there and is always slow, around 0.5 Mbps download, and 4.0 Mbps upload. All other devices in my house work fine with no speed issues. My router is a Cisco Lynksys E1200.

I plan on going to the Mac store soon to see if they can provide a solution. I will post how it goes either good or bad. I hope they can fix the issue, if not I will be returning this computer. It's a shame because I bought a Mac to avoid issues like this.

Have you tried updating the Routers firmware?

    Hi,

    My problem still exists :-(

I tried removing the Bluetooth PAN & update of DNS but this made no difference,

My problem is not the router as all other (Windows/ iphone etc) equipment connects fine.

    To recap:

I have 2 Preferred wifi connects configured. 2-4 times out of 10; when I open the laptop lid - the WIFI connection box appears says 'cannot find prefeered network' - yet it is in the list - if I select it & say join, its connects & all is okay until the next fail.

Any ideas to how I can resolve this of what is making this happen?

(Ps. I have tried this on different routers - and expact same behaviour)

    Thanks,

    t

Switching off bluetooth didn't work for me but I went into NETWORK and told the computer I wanted to 'Join Other Network' put in the information for the network that I normally used (that was already selected) and suddenly the annoying little thing with only 1 usb! decided to work.

I am also finding the if I have vuze on  while trying to do other things on the Internet, then I lose Internet connection.  Does the mean my ISP is block vuze?   Thanks

Yes, I recently purchased the router and the firmware is up to date. I double checked just to make sure.
